US administrations are so fucking hypocritical.

All this talk a decade ago about how Saddam had ties to Al Qaeda and no one could confirm a single "operational" link or transfer of money.

Here, Obama's White House is giving 25 million dollars to these repulsive rebels and there are confirmed links of Al Qaeda operatives within the rebel movement.

Spending cuts here and talks of reforming (gutting) social security, but we have 25 million to fight a third war in Libya.

Mujahideen 2.0.

Probably somewhere down the road it will somehow end up biting them in the arse. They never seem to learn.

The rebels show no sign of success whatsoever. Not even their tanks and Western-aided air-strikes can halt Gaddafi's forces. I doubt this'll end like the Mujahideen vs. PDPA war ended.

Which was the story of the entire Afghan war. The Afghan army had even more impressive kill ratios against the well-trained mujahideen. Libyan government forces don't seem at all that intent to kill the rebels.

At the seige of Jalalabad, some 10000 civilians were killed by the mujahideen, who suffered at least 3000 dead themselves. Compare that to Misratah, where 2 months of fighting has resulted in under 300 deaths, rebels and civilians.

It was financial collapse that did the PDPA in.

Yes. Correct me if I'm wrong, the USSR continued sending aid and supplies to the PDPA after they left Afghanistan in '89. Them collapsing in '91 put the PDPA in a tight spot after that. Thus, leading to the PDPA's collapse just a year later.

Afghanistan used to be a significant producer of natural gas, but the fields began to dry up by the late 80s. Gorbachev wanted to wash his hands of the entire thing, as he viewed Afghanistan little more than a financial drain, but the Soviet military used its influence to secure continued aid to the country. When the USSR broke up, Yeltsin took advantage of the power vacuum left in the state and moved forward on negotiations with the mujahideen.

A stab in the back is more like it.
