No need to worry - it already came out in the US and even the Orange Country Objectivist Club gave it a bad review.
The movie seems to only be supported by tea-party types, not even the hard core Ayn Randists... apparently Objectivists are the Trekkies of the right-wing.

Thank Holy Hell for that... I remember the other thread on this flick announcing it's impending release. Then, like a fart in the wind, the movie just disappeared. I haven't seen one TV spot on it, nor have I seen it advertised as playing in any of the local theatres.

Atlas Shrugged: Part I (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=atlasshrugged.htm) was the top-grossing limited release of the weekend, generating $1.7 million at 299 single-screen locations.
For a pure independent release, Atlas Shrugged: Part I's opening was fine. But for the first-ever adaptation of Ayn Rand's influential mega-selling 1957 novel that had far more media hype than any other independent movie could dream of, it was disappointing.
This will definitely fade away quickly and Parts 2 and 3 will never see the light of day.

Come to think of it, why should I be surprised - emmeryville is full of gentrified condoes and UC Berkeley probably has more per-capita Objectivists than the general population.
I doubt it will still be playing in any of these theaters by next weekend though. I mean how often can the owner of Top-Dog go see this movie? Not enough to keep it afloat for two weeks.
Hey, Praxis, what do you say - wanna go pay for some other movie and sneak into this one so we can laugh at it from the front row like DeNiro in "Cape Fear"?

The title of her book infuriates me. If the atlas metaphor should be used, it should be used to describe the workers' plight in propping up the fat cats, corporate pirates, parasites, vipers, bloodsuckers, sharks, hyneas, vultures, and other exploitative interlopers. Hmm ... what a clever but venomous woman that Rand was.

In its opening Friday, "Atlas Shrugged," at 299 theaters it grossed $674,000. This week it went wide at 465 theaters and the gross was $307,000, a drop of 55%. This works out to $660 per theater.
By way of comparison, Michael Moore's "Capitalism: A Love Story" played its second Friday at 962 theaters and grossed $1,488,000. This works out to an average of $1,547 per theater.
Moore's movie ended up making $14.3 million. "Atlas Shrugged" looks to make about $5 million total.
It looks like the Free Market doesn't like itself.

SINGING!
“But you know, part three could be a musical . . . like a Les Miserables kind of a musical,” said Aglialoro. “That’s part of the impact and I guess I haven’t said this publicly yet, but I’m looking at it completely different if part three is a musical with quality music that’s done in a certain way that people will like.” (this is not a joke, he really said this in a interview)

Atlas Shrugged made $881,000 at the box office this weekend. This compares not so favorably with Michael Moore's last release"Capitalism: a Love Story" which made $4,447,378 its second weekend.
Its total is up to $3,096,815. It looks like it will squeeze out about $5,000,000 total at the box office. Of course, after the theater gets its cut, only about 50% of this will go back to the film producers, about 2 1/2 million. Apparently the film cost $20,000,000 to make.
It will probably run on the Fox movie channel or on Newscorp's FX network. Newscorp will probably give the producers a couple of million for it, but it is quite doubtful it will ever recoup its loses.
As others have intimated, I can't see a Part 2 in the future either.

'Atlas Shrugged' producer: 'Critics, you won.' He's going 'on strike.'
http://www.latimes.com/images/blogs/icon-comments.gif
EXCLUSIVE: Twelve days after opening "Atlas Shrugged: Part 1," the producer of the Ayn Rand adaptation said Tuesday that he is reconsidering his plans to make Parts 2 and 3 because of scathing reviews and flagging box office returns for the film.
"Critics, you won," said John Aglialoro, the businessman who spent 18 years and more than $20 million of his own money to make, distribute and market "Atlas Shrugged: Part 1," which covers the first third of Rand's dystopian novel. "I’m having deep second thoughts on why I should do Part 2."
"Atlas Shrugged" was the top-grossing limited release in its opening weekend, generating $1.7 million on 299 screens and earning a respectable $5,640 per screen. But the the box office dropped off 47% in the film's second week in release even as "Atlas Shrugged" expanded to 425 screens, and the movie seemed to hold little appeal for audiences beyond the core group of Rand fans to whom it was marketed.
Aglialoro attributed the box office drop-off to "Atlas Shrugged's" poor reviews. Only one major critic -- Kyle Smith of the New York Post -- gave "Atlas" a mixed-to-positive review, calling the film "more compelling than the average mass-produced studio item." The movie has a dismal 7% fresh rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes thanks to critics like the Chicago Tribune's Michael Phillips, who said "Atlas" is "crushingly ordinary in every way." Roger Ebert called the film "the most anticlimactic non-event since Geraldo Rivera broke into Al Capone’s vault," while Rolling Stone's Peter Travers said the movie "sits there flapping on screen like a bludgeoned seal."
"The New York Times gave us the most hateful review of all," said Aglialoro, who also has a writing credit on the movie. "They didn’t cover it."
The novel, a sacred text among many conservatives for Rand's passionate defense of capitalism, takes place at an unspecified future time in which the U.S. is mired in a deep depression and a mysterious phenomenon is causing the nation's leading industrialists to disappear or "strike."
Aglialoro's 97-minute adaptation is directed by first-timer Paul Johansson and stars little-known TV actors Taylor Schilling (as railroad executive Dagny Taggart) and Grant Bowler (as steel magnate Hank Rearden).
Though the film has made only $3.1 million so far, Aglialoro said he believes he'll recoup his investment after TV, DVD and other ancillary rights are sold. But he is backing off an earlier strategy to expand "Atlas" to 1,000 screens and reconsidering his plans to start production on a second film this fall.
"Why should I put up all of that money if the critics are coming in like lemmings?" Aglialoro said. "I’ll make my money back and I'll make a profit, but do I wanna go and do two? Maybe I just wanna see my grandkids and go on strike."
Aglialoro, who is chief executive of the exercise equipment manufacturer Cybex, said he is not completely finished with Hollywood, however. An avid poker player who won the U.S. Poker Championship in 2004, he has a dramatic script

OK, this has got to be embarrassing.
The kids in the Fox & Friends Day Care spent a couple of minutes yesterday fluffing Atlas Shrugged and feigning amazement at its unprecedented success. Steve Doocy beamed that it’s “amazing” and that “it has really taken off.” Brian Kilmeade exuberantly delivered the film’s stats saying that “this is a lot of money for people in the business – they say this is staggering.” He gleefully mused that “the profit’s gonna go through the roof.” Juliet Huddy was glowing as she claimed that there was so much demand for the film that the producers “don’t have enough copies of the film.” She continued saying that “It sort of just came out of nowhere and it really blossomed.”
Wow! This must be a blockbuster in the making. I may have to retract my previous article (http://www.newscorpse.com/ncWP/?p=4264) calling the movie a bomb. Or maybe not. Because today the producer came out and spoiled the whole thing (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movies/2011/04/atlas-shrugged-producer-critics-you-won-hes-going-on-strike.html?cid=6a00d8341c630a53ef015431f7fc1f970c ) for the Foxies by saying that “he is reconsidering his plans to make Parts 2 and 3 because of scathing reviews and flagging box office returns for the film.”
“Critics, you won,” said John Aglialoro, the businessman who spent 18 years and more than $20 million of his own money to make, distribute and market “Atlas Shrugged: Part 1,” which covers the first third of Rand’s dystopian novel. “I’m having deep second thoughts on why I should do Part 2.”
Nice of him to blame it on the critics and not his shoddy filmmaking. Aglialoro also said that he is reconsidering his plans to expand to 1,000 screens by the end of this month. That decision is probably being helped along by the fact that there aren’t 1,000 theaters who want the film, despite Huddy’s giddy imaginings.
It’s all over for Atlas Shrugged. Rarely does a film’s producer go public with his project’s epitaph after the second weekend in release. All of the Tea Bag Media who were falsely claiming that the film was a surprise success are now revealed to be liars. And it doesn’t get much worse than the dishonesty exhibited by the Fox & Friends crew whose fatuous hype was deflated the next day by the film’s producer. That’s what they get for acting as the PR agents for a crummy movie.

More bad box office news for "Atlas Shrugged." It made just $130,000 on its third Friday, bringing its total to 3.6 million. This was a drop of 58% from last Friday. It means after three weekends, it will be at about $4 million. This leads to the high probably it will just barely reach $5 million by the time it ends its theater run, probably two weeks from now.
Unfortunately the Producer, John Aglialoro, will not get all of this $5 million. The theaters will likely keep about half. Of the remaining $2.50 million, we have Rocky Mountain Distribution taking half. This leaves Aglialoro making back $1.25 million on his 20 million investment. Not to worry, Murdock's Newscorp will no doubt come to his rescue and give him perhaps $4 million for the television rights. DVD sales will earn him another million. Ayn Rand is practically unknown outside the U.S., so international sales may bring in another $2 million at best. We can guess that the total income will be about $8 million for the film. Subtracting that from the $20 million cost, we have a net loss of about $12 million.
As head of Cybex International, which makes fitness machines, Aglialoro knows about losing money. Three years ago, it was at $4.20 a share. It is now at $1.07 a share. If you had invested $100,000 three years ago, you would now have about $25,000 left.
The company reported a profit of .4 million in the first quarter of 2011, better than the .8 million loss it reported in the first quarter of 2010.
Aglialoro received some bad news in December when he lost a products liability lawsuit:
(from Hackney Publications)
December 17, 2010
Appeal in the Offing after Jury Rules Against Exercise Equipment Maker
A jury in New York state had found Cybex International Inc. responsible for $65.9 million in damages to a woman, Natalie M. Barnhard, who was paralyzed in a freak accident involving a leg extension machine manufactured by Cybex. In a statement issued shortly after the verdict, CYBEX Chairman and CEO John Aglialoro said his company “will vigorously pursue all avenues to attain a reversal of this verdict.”
The verdict, rendered by a jury in the New York State Supreme Court for Erie County, followed an 8-week trial. It is believed to be the largest verdict of its kind in Erie County history, according to the firm that represented Barnhard, Phillips Lytle LLP.
Barnhard was working as a physical therapy assistant at Amherst Orthopedic Physical Therapy PC on Oct. 22, 2004 when the injured occurred. The machine, which weighed 608 pounds, toppled over on her as she tried to do a shoulder stretch, causing severe injuries.
Barnhard sued, claiming Cybex sold a defectively designed and unstable product. She also claimed Medway, a Mass.-based company, failed to give adequate warnings and instructions regarding the installation and anchoring requirements for the machine.
While Amherst Orthopedic was not targeted by the plaintiff, it was named as a third-party defendant in the case and found 20 percent liable for Barnhard's injuries.
In a statement, Kevin English, a partner at Phillips Lytle, said the verdict was “a fair and just result.” Michael Law, another partner at the firm, added: “The size of the verdict is substantial but warranted because of what Natalie has endured over the past six years, and what she is facing for the rest of her life; it is absolutely appropriate.”
Meanwhile, Cybex’s Aglialoro pointed to the freak nature of the accident, which should have absolved his company.
“This piece of equipment has been in continuous operation for over 25 years in the same facility as Ms. Barnhard was injured to the current date, with no incidents reported other than this one event. We strongly believe that CYBEX was not negligent and is in no way responsible for this tragic accident.”

Has anyone here actually seen it? I had a heart attack years ago, and I don't want to get sick again, so don't count on me. The trailers and still look dreadful.
By the way, if anyone has ever seen The Fountainhead, they'll find it weird in the extreme. The cast is excellent: Patricia O'Neill, Gary Cooper and Raymond Massey. If you don't know what you're seeing, it looks like some kind of weird urban drama with a very implausible ending. I expect it got made to reqard Rand for testifying during the reign of Hollywood McCarthyism.

As they walk around the factory Taggart wonders aloud what could have happened to TCMC. Rearden notes that they "flattened their wage scale, paying each according to his needs and not his ability" which quite naturally, Taggart responds, led to "the managers and more skilled workers leaving." Yes, Hank agrees, "and the ones who remained behind couldn't run the place."
Remember, these two just fucked. They are supposed to have great passion for one another. And in the span of 90 seconds they have read us an engineering blueprint and part of a fundraising pamphlet from the Von Mises Institute. I could never quite figure out how Rand sells as many books as shie does. Here's the answer. These days, she's basically a vanity author.
Every year, 400,000 copies of Rand’s novels are offered free to Advanced Placement high school programs. They are paid for by the Ayn Rand Institute, whose director, Yaron Brook, said the mission was “to keep Rand alive.”
Last year, bookstores sold 150,000 copies of the book.http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/15/business/15atlas.html?_r=4&oref=slogin&pagewanted=print

Just when you think it can't get worse, the news for "Atlas Shrugged" gets worse.
Apparently, according to Box Office Mojo, it will end up with only about $400,000 this weekend. By way of comparison to other politically themed movies on their third weekend:
Atlas Shrugged - $400,000
Sicko - $3,600,000
Capitalism: A Love Story - $2,600,000
An Inconvenient Truth - $1,500,000
Religulous - $1.400,000
It has made even less than the creationist documentary "Expelled:No Intelligence Allowed" which made $678,000 its third weekend.
While it still might surge and end up with $5 million, 4.5 million now seems the more likely total.
We might compare it to some other movies that came out in April that cost around $20 million:
"Atlas Shrugged" (cost $20 million)- $3.8 million
"Diary of a Wimpy Kid (cost $21 million) - $51 million
"Soul Suffer"(cost $18 million) - $33 million
It is not clear that "Atlas Shrugged," but the movie-going audience certainly shrugged.
Atlas Shrugged Producer Comes Crawling Back to Hollywood (http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2011/05/02/atlas-shrugged-producer-comes-crawling-back-to-hollywood)

It was just a terrible weekend to be a conservative: The Atlas Shrugged movie (http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/assholes-paradise/Content?oid=7770095)pulled in a meager $468,573 at the box office. This means the film has made $3,947,827 in its three weeks in wide release. Again, it cost an estimated 20 million dollars to make and market. Quick, somebody figure out how many DVDs they'd have to sell in order to turn a profit!
The Wall Street Journal (http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2011/04/30/atlas-shrugged-producer-hopes-for-round-two/) interviewed the film's producer, John Aglialoro about his hopes that Hollywood will now want to partner in making the second part of a projected trilogy whose first film is a remarkable failure:
As for making second and third installments of “Atlas Shrugged,” Aglialoro said he wouldn’t proceed until he had a more extensive marketing plan in place.
Ideally, he would also like to partner with Hollywood for the next go-around. “It’s my hope that some of the major studios will believe that this is not just a movie and it’s over. I’m open to making a deal with a major studio. I don’t want to fight them. I want to join them,” he said.
He said he’d be open to doing another $10 million independent production. “But wouldn’t it be nice to do a $50 million movie? And now the studios have a laboratory in part 1.”
This is the same guy who said he was considering (http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2011/04/27/atlas-shrugged-producer-whines-about-bad-reviews) going on strike and not make any more Atlas Shrugged movies because the critics hurt his feelings. Good lord, this is so much fun to watch. I mean, I knew the movie would flop, but who knew the action of flopping would take so long or be so enjoyable?

Did people actually think that this would do well? Isn't it just a bunch of scenes featuring rich people talking about how great their steel is, and how they're being exploited by the big meanies in government? Maybe if the film had Seth Rogen and some explosions/gunfights they would've made more money.

It's no surprise the film's shit, you can't polish a turd after all.

Box Office dropped another 51% from last Tuesday. It was at $47,859 this Tuesday. It has passed the four million mark with $4,042,000. With average ticket prices over $8, we can estimate that about 500,000 people have bought tickets in the 19 days that it has been open. It will probably sell another 50-75,000 tickets. That probably represents the hard-core Ayne Rand-Tea party base in the country, under 600,000 people, or about 1/4 of one percent of the teenage and adult population in the country.

It's a disaster for the studio, which fares badly for them since they released it as a two-part film, like Harry Potter 7 and Kill Bill. There's enough libertarian money to finance the second installment, but its poor performance is a real testament to how shitty the source material is.

...There's enough libertarian money to finance the second installment...
And get a tax write off when it flops.

More box office bad news for the Randopians: ATLAS SHRUGGED Plunges 70%: Box Office (http://www.altfg.com/blog/movie/atlas-shrugged-box-office-taylor-schilling-grant-bowler/)
The movie should disappear from theaters by next week with a total box office take of under $4.5 million. As mentioned previously, the producers should see about 1/3 of this back, or about 1.5 million. With a great deal of luck, it could make back five or six million more from television and dvd sales. That will still leave it with a huge 60% loss on the investment. Normally, unless a movie makes at least a 50% profit at the box office (say $30 million in this case where the film cost $20 million) there is little chance of a sequel. Sequels are generally more expensive and there is no guarantee that a sequel will do better than the original.
If the first film does well, there is always lots of money around to do a sequel, however if the first film flops, there is no reason for a sequel. The classic case is the 1984 movie "Dune." It was based on what was the highest selling science-fiction novel of all time by Frank Herbert. It was the first of his six Dune novels. It was set to be a series of six movies. Its budget of $40 million was enormous at the time. It made back $30 million in the United States. All plans for sequels were immediately dropped.
The same thing happened to John Travolta's "Battlefield Earth" (2000) which was scheduled to be the first in a series of science fiction novels by scientologist creator L.Ron Hubbard. It cost $75 million to make and made $21 million at the box office. Like Ayn Rand, Hubband has thousands of rich cult members, but apparently none of them was willing to invest more money after the first fiasco.
Unless Rand Paul wins the presidency, I would not be looking for any sequel anytime in the next decade.

The Atlas Shrugged Movie Continues to Suck in a Spectacular Fashion (http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2011/11/11/the-atlas-shrugged-movie-continues-to-suck-in-a-spectacular-fashion)

BEST FRIDAY NEWS EVER, courtesy of Slog tippers Matthew and Tom. Remember that bomb of an Atlas Shrugged movie that came out last year? I forgive you if you don't; it was a real piece of shit, and nobody went to see it. (Except for me. And a couple of other people. (http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/assholes-paradise/Content?oid=7770095)) Well, it just came out on DVD. And now the Atlas Shrugged, Part 1 DVD is being recalled. Can you guess why? Oh my God. Oh, my God. This is so good. (http://www.badassdigest.com/2011/11/11/atlas-shrugged-dvd-recalled-because-of-ideological-error) Are you ready?
It's because the DVD packaging reads, "AYN RAND’s timeless novel of courage and self-sacrifice comes to life…”
Harmon Kaslow, CEO of Atlas Productions and Producer of the film stated “As we all well know, the ideas brought to life in Atlas Shrugged are entirely antithetical to the idea of ‘self-sacrifice’ as a virtue. Atlas is quite literally a story about the dangers of self-sacrifice. The error was an unfortunate one and fans of Ayn Rand and Atlas have every right to be upset… and we have every intention of making it right.”
So the company is recalling all the unsold copies and offering anyone who may have bought a copy of the DVD a new cover that reads, "AYN RAND’s timeless novel of rational self-interest comes to life…" The COO of Atlas Productions sounds like he's still in shock:
“You can imagine how mortified we all were when we saw the DVD but, it was simply too late – the product was already on shelves all over the Country. It was certainly no surprise when the incredulous emails ensued. The irony is inescapable.”
That's it. Shut down the internet. It's time to celebrate the weekend, everybody!

At least DUNE was awesome, ATLAS SHRUGGED was like watching paint dry. Absolutely boring waste of time. Furthermore, BATTLEFIELD EARTH has its virtues as a movie to get stoned to. This movie sucked.
