View Full Version : Opposing Ideologies Census

I'm curious to know how many people, out of the total membership of the board, are Restricted. It would be interesting to know the percentage. It may also be impossible to calculate.

I have a feeling the responses might be skewed towards the restricted leftists and progressives on here because any hard-core conservatives will know that any census is just a ploy to find out who they are and hand over the information to Obama so we can begin the secret socialist takeover!
I was talking to Barack the other day and he said it should be ready by October.

It would be very easy to find out the percentage, actually. I'm not an expert of vBulletin, but if it's the same as phpbb, 'restricted' is just a group with specific permissions. An admin could presumably tell us how many people are in that group; this can easily be seen from the admin control panel (or whatever it's called on vBulletin). We could then put that number over the total number of registered users, to get a percentage. Clearly a very easy figure to calculate.
Easy, though, doesn't mean worthwhile. I have absolutely no interest in knowing how many restricted users there are. I couldn't think of a single reason anybody could ever care to know that. I won't be asking any admin for the numbers...

Numbers are nothing to fear. I'm just interested in what percentage have been oppressed.

OI is not oppression. It's exclusion from certain forums on an online discussion board. This is done because the people who set up these boards don't want every thread to turn into a fight between people who disagree on certain fundamental questions. I'm sure you can find some other boards where your views will not get you restricted - but RevLeft's rules are fairly straightforward and hardly a secret.

I suggested ideas that made some people uncomfortable with their inability to answer them. And so I was Restricted. I've asked the Admins to find one sentence where I broke the "party line" and have yet to hear back from them. And it was not my intention to make this thread about me.
In any case, what does that have to do with the request? I'm interested to know what percent of the population is Restricted.

You were restricted for a reason. On the topic of a census, I have no idea how one would even go about finding that out.

Lol, I think census was the wrong word for me to use. I was thinking more like simple statistics. They have statistics on how many posts get put in OI (#1). How can it be so hard to put statistics on residents.

OI has a lot of posts because it doesn't have all that many subforums. You can't compare OI to any other subforum on the board- you'd have to compare OI to the entire rest of the board.

Cool, let's do that too. See I love statistics. I'm addicted to my own website's statistics, because I'm trying to understand how I get 2 million hits a year (actually last year it was 2,481,623) and I don't updated it that often. Content I guess.

Well, a crude way to do it would be to place a simple poll (and hope that everyone responded)-
Are you an OIer?
Simple as that.
You could perhaps add other questions like-
Do you visit OI but are not an OIer?
Have you been an OIer but unrestricted?
etc.
Sasha
19th April 2011, 21:44
we have:
18000+ unrestricted and not-banned registerd members of which around 5000 posted more than 10 posts
we have an whopping 7000+ banned users of which most are spambots i assume
and than we have an grand total of exactly 583 restricted users.
so if we take that 10 post minimum to define an actual revlefter worthy of mention you'll find that you have about 1 OIr for every 10 normal established users

Not only that, Opposing Ideologies is the reason for revolution and real oppression. So of course theres going to be more dialog about it and how to over throw it.
I always felt having an OI forum on a leftist board was very benevolent of our dear leader. Most wouldnt even entertain the idea. So please enjoy your stay, Sadena Meti, as limited as it may be.

:-) You mean like the fundamental questions between anarchy vs leninism vs left communism, Mao vs Stalin vs Trotsky and what, who, when is/was better, best and bestest? :-)
Not everybody is in here because a ruling made sense, was right or was because of fundamental differences of opinion with the rest of the board...it could also have been personal agenda advocating...or use of a single bad word...hence we have the unfair restrictions thread..and hence decisions can be appealed.
I am not saying its fair...but see it as some sort of penal colony with parole board and all...and some members are simply serving multiple life sentences.

The Gulag was not oppression. It was exclusion from the communist system and public discourse. This was done because our Lord God Stalin didn't want every discussion of policy and the glories of mass starvation and oligarchy to turn into a fight between people who disagree on whether being starved, shot, and enslaved by a bureaucratic collectivist regime was the most awesome thing in history or not.
