Hi everyone,
I discovered this board while searching google, trying to find out why people have such a negative perception of socialism. I recently joined the SPUSA, after being disillusioned over the years with Republicans, then Democrats, the media, etc. Started reading about anarchism, anarcho-syndicalism (joined the Wobblies too!), socialism, Marx. Thought I might learn something on this list! And hopefully meet kindred spirits.

I made the mistake today of telling a coworker (who I thought was a friend) my views, and e-mailing him some info on SPUSA, and he e-mailed me a really mean-spirited, insulting reply. I mean, I was absolutely stunned. His reaction was pure vitriol. Has anyone else had this sort of experience with friends/acquaintences/coworkers?

Ah, but back to introductions: I'm from Birmingham, Alabama, where it seems like there IS no left. Everyone's pretty conservative. But, it's home, and me & my hubby like it ok. I work part-time, like to garden a bit, like to read & listen to audiobooks, have 2 guinea pigs.

Look forward to meeting you guys--

I actually delivered the lord's prayer at the burial of my sister's guinea pigs when we were kids. One of them was sold to us pregnant (we had two females) but thankfully the pet store took the babies as they didn't realize she was set to have babies. Anyway I hope your guinea pigs are doing well.

As far as your co-work Yeah I've been there - in my experience right-wingers can be utterly pathetic and petty. On some level I think it is a big reason why they are right wing in the first place - they do nothing but blame other people for their problems and are sorry human beings. They are sadistic fucks - it's important to realize that there are some people who are never going to change and for whom it's too late. We can't waste our time on them there's a whole world out there of decent open minded folk we need to be working on.
