Andrew J. and Judith S. Klienfeld on the culture of freedom. (http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/kleinfeld-kleinfeld200309240830.asp)

What elements in the American culture work to maintain freedom and which of those elements can be applied in Iraq?

I love this line.

"That we Americans assume a natural, strong, universal love of individual freedom shows how successful our socialization into the culture of freedom is."

This is the kind of rhetoric that allows the U.S to justify any foreign policy.

"Our American culture of liberty arises from unique historical circumstances"

These for example? This American history?

Thanks to the former member (vox) that brought these to my attention

"What can be transferred to Iraq are institutions that may go some distance in fostering a freedom-loving culture. Chief among these is the free-enterprise system"

What he's saying is, let's introduce American business whereby we can pay these workers next to nothing, thereby creating a more 'affluent' society. Haliburton already comes to mind here.

"If more people have money, more will have an interest in personal freedom"

Well, if only it were so easy. Interesting that wealth is the source of freedom.

"The creation of a culture that supports democracy and freedom"

See the above links to see how the U.S government previously helped institute 'democracy and freedom'

"And during the transition from the old regime to the new, we can provide some physical security for Iraqis seeking to institute a regime of freedom."

Which equals: ongoing military presence to ensure the U.S interests are upheld.
