View Full Version : My Bosses Are Nazis -- Help?

I encounter my bosses using racist slurs on a regular basis. Not towards myself, but specifically towards East Asians (my work is located on the outskirts of Bradford, West Yorkshire, where there is a large East Asian population). Most "normal" folk would let the comments just pass over their heads, but be it that I consider myself an anti-fascist, I just can't. I also have an Asian girlfriend, and find the comments not only offensive to myself, but her as well.
Yeah, I know, the obvious solution would be just to leave this job and find another, but times are real tough in the U.K. right now. I graduated from University in 2008 with a "nonsense degree" (English Literature & Creative Writing) and immediately after that I was critically ill for a year and half and was off work, so I'm not exactly the first choice for employers. I've spent months and months looking for other work, but I either find nothing relating to my skills/qualifications and/or I'm rejected for not having enough experience (discrimination?) Last thing I want to do is sit on the dole.
Anyone had similar experiences within the workplace?
And has anyone got any advice?
Cheers.

Forget it and ignore them, or think by yourself "Fools!" or something. They're your bosses. If you act, you will get dismissed. Or if they are using racist slurs again, make sure you have evidence that you can use against them and report it to someone that can help you. A friend, famillymember or even a policeman.

They're hardly Nazi's are they? Do they directly discriminate against Asians or go around harassing them?
If it's just a bit of attitudinal racism when they are in private then tell them that you find it very offensive and ask them not to make comments like that when you are around.
otherwise stop over reacting not every racist is a Nazi if they were we'd really be in trouble

Is there a central office you can contact? Contact them anonymously, and explain the situation, that's your only bet. It's too much of an financial risk to leave due to dissatisfaction, use the resources you have within your work.

Ask them not to say these things or complain to someone above his head. I'd say to smack him in the mouth but you'd probably lose your job.

Try to get them fired from the company they work for. With a bit of luck you could climb up that ladder too. :D

Is there a way you could organize? Is there a radical union you could become part of or a solidarity group that might help you? I agree that if these don't exist, you should just take the blows for the sake of your job and money, but if there is a way to make your dismissal a bit more difficult, then confront the boss straight up. It would be a shame to let racism exist unmolested.

Am I overreacting, really? I don't think that I am.
And I say they do directly discriminate. They don't hire Asians (or "foreigners" as they put it) who come for job interviews, and they refuse to take any bookings/business of Asian clients who come in and inquire.

Cheers for the advice, guys.
Thing is, it's a small, privately-run company. These two people are at the top of the pile. There is no head office. So if I were to complain, I wouldn't know who to complain to.

Fair enough mate, but in your OP you just said that they made racist comments. Personally I see a massive difference between prejudice and then actively using that prejudice to discriminate against those people which is why I asked.
What they are doing is illegal so if there is a higher manager that you think may be sympathetic then talk to them but only after you have spoken to your union rep if you have one, if you don't I'd recommend going to citizens advice bureau for some free legal advice. Something needs to be done but it could turn out to be a very nasty battle.
Good luck :)

Is there any way you can get documentation to prove they discriminate? Any possibility of going to an Asian civil rights organisation and perhaps have then pull a sting operation? In the US a year or so ago a small group of rightists brought down ACORN, a liberal anti-discrimination/job training organisation though a sort of sting operation, maybe this could be done in reverse? Perhaps you could get an Asian friend to pose as a potential customer/client and when he/she gets turned down, make sure its on a memory card.Post it on Youtube or some other place, let the fun begin. Of course you will need to be very discrete.
