Mad respect for Woody Guthrie yo, mad respect...Seriously though, I definitely like Guthrie a lot. Speaking of Woody Guthrie, has anyone else been listening to Mermaid Avenue a lot lately?

Yep,Woody was a card carrying member of CP-USA. :hammer:
There's a great book about him called "Woody Guthrie:A Life" that I would recommend to anyone wanting to learn about Woody.

I loved Woody as well as his son Arlo. Arlo was the voice of protest in the 60s and 70s. He had quite a sense of humor when relaying his songs of protest.

Great thread!

Woody wrote a lot of songs for and about labor. His song "This Land is Your Land" was edited down and used in the U$ to sound a lot more patriotic than Woody intended. There were several verses left out. I have highlighted the verses that are commonly left out from the song.

The Original Version:

THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND
By Woody Guthrie

This land is your land, this land is my land,
From California to the New York Island,
From the redwood forest to the gulfstream waters,
This land was made for you and me.

As I went walking that ribbon of highway
I saw above me that endless skyway,
I saw below me that golden valley,
This land was made for you and me.

This land is ...

I roamed and rambled, and I followed my footsteps,
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts,
All around me a voice was sounding,
This land was made for you and me.

This land is ...

When the sun come shining, then I was strolling,
And the wheat fields waving, and the dust clouds rolling,
A voice was chanting as the fog was lifting,
This land was made for you and me.

This land is ...

In the squares of the city by the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office I saw my people
And some were stumbling and some were wondering if
This land was made for you and me.

This land is ...

As I went rumbling that dusty highway
I saw a sign that said private property
But on the other side it didn't say nothing
This land was made for you and me.

This land is ...

Nobody living can ever stop me
As I go walking my freedom highway
Nobody living can make me turn back
This land was made for you and me.

Woody was the most prolific writer of quality songs I have ever come accross.

His album with one song from Pete Seeger ''Ballads of Sacco and Vanzetti'' has my most lasting impression. I first heard in when I was
about seven or eight.

I'm not familiar with Woody's work, but I love Arlo's stuff that I've heard.
Particularily Alice's Reseraunt and the film as well.

I think the "left out" verses were added by his son Arlo Guthrie after Woody died. I think Woody Guthrie is one of the greatest Folk Singers and influences next to Bob Dylan. And did I mention he was an awesome guy ?

Speaking of folk, you cats should try to pick up some John Prine. I know very little about folk in general, but I grew up with this guy...

Yes... I don't know how many times I've seen John Prine live but every time is a good show.
