View Full Version : Anti-Capitalist Day of Silence

Ok, so, a few days ago (Friday, April 15th), a lot of my friends didn't talk all day as silent-protest for gay marriage rights (we live in USA). They had a little paper about 'think of all the voices you aren't hearing, etc.' And I thought of the quote Silence is argument carried out by other means. ... And then I thought, why not do a silent protest but as anti-capitalism?
What do you think of this idea? What would be good to write as explanation? What would be a good way to recruit other people to this?

on the world stage, the anti-capitalist movement is already pretty silent. why excaberate this?

To make a point about how silent it is? The point isn't to exacerbate it... The point is to draw attention to it.

Being silenced as a closeted queer kid is not the same as being silenced because you're not well-educated enough about your politics to talk about them in a way that's relevant to people. I've never felt silenced for my politics except by people who were trying to minimize my oppression the way you're doing now.

Or maybe this is just a stupid idea?
I was just thinking of it as a demonstration of solidarity with exploited workers, etc. that isn't too hard to do but effectively sends a message since everyone you encounter that day will wonder why you aren't talking.... Does that make sense? It makes sense in my head slightly...

Not talking doesn't send a message. Talking does. The day of silence may or may not make people curious (I don't know because I've never gone to high school which is the only place where this really happens) but since most people who do it aren't too good at explaining what exactly it is they're protesting I don't really feel like it goes anywhere.
The day of silence is a stupid idea to begin with but appropriating it is... well, appropriative.

I think the opposing force would love it if every day was a 'keep quiet' day. I'd rather have a 'make noise' day and take to the street with pots and pans, fireworks, banners and road flares.

Well.... This is school. As much as I would love to make noise and fire, etc.... probably not gonna happen. Taking the opposite approach might create interest? O_o or maybe I'm just stupid....
And the implication is carrying around a paper with an explanation, etc. And probably taking some sharpies and writing all over myself, etc.
