April Spring Friendship Art Festival, an art festival in praise of great man
The April Spring Friendship Art Festival is an international art festival which is grandly held in Pyongyang, the capital of Korea, on the occasion of April 15, the birth anniversary of great President Kim Il Sung.
The festival started in 1982 on the occasion of the 70th birth anniversary of President Kim Il Sung. This year the 27th festival is under way.
The festival has its mark, flag and song and posters are published in various ways each time. Here is the "Song of Pyongyang Festival".

As the song reads, the April Spring Friendship Art Festival is aimed at deepening friendship and unity and strengthening cultural exchanges between artistes of many countries under the idea of independence, peace and friendship and contributing to the joint development of the music and arts of humanity. It is a great art festival embracing all fields of theatrical arts including vocal music, instrumental music, dance and circus.
The festival brings together world-famous art organizations and talented artistes including international concours prize winners, People's Artistes and Merited Artistes. As of 2007 the festival was attended by more than 18,000 artistes including over 2,000 international and national concours prize winners and People's Artistes and Merited Artistes of more than 1,700 art organizations from a total of at least 1,000 countries.
Performances are given by separate countries and organizations or divided into genres or in the form of combined and joint performances according to the scale of art troupes of the participant countries and genres of their items. Diplomas, cups, premia and souvenirs are awarded to the excellent organizations and artistes who show wonderful artistry. Grand opening and closing ceremonies and different other events take place during the festival.
The great leader President Kim Il Sung enjoyed joint performances of artistes of a total of over 800 countries from the five continents and overseas Korean artistes who participated in the Festival on 34 occasions and congratulated them on their successful performances and posed for pictures together with them.
The April Spring Friendship Art Festival is distinguished from other international art festivals by the performance of many songs in praise of President Kim Il Sung. During the first festival in 1982 the delegation of the Japan-Korea Music and Art Interchange Society, the "Tiempo Nuevo" Art Troupe of Peru and artistes of many other countries sang the immortal revolutionary paean "Song of General Kim Il Sung", which became the prelude to the Festival. Since then, the song was put on the stage by the Chinese National Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow State Academic Chamber Chorus of Russia, the All-Army Ensemble of Mongolia and other art troupes on more than 1,000 occasions. Put on the stage are musical pieces written and prepared by foreign artistes and overseas Korean artistes for the Festival. They have written and performed hundreds of works including songs "Song dedicated to President Kim Il Sung", "Looking up to the Kumsusan Memorial Palace", "Kim Il Sung, the great leader of humanity" and "The sun of Juche will shine forever" and dances "Whenever we think of the leader", "Flowers following the sun" and "Burning faith".
After July 1994 when President Kim Il Sung passed away, the songs are still resounding far and wide in praise of the great man.
Mitsuko Okasawara, Chairwoman of the Japan-Korea Music and Art Interchange Society, who participated in the Festival since the first one, met a reporter of "Voice of Korea" during the 24th festival in 2006, and said:
"I visit Korea almost every year since the start of the April Spring Friendship Art Festival. I sing songs for President Kim Il Sung every year. I sing for Japan-Korea friendship, but with the feeling that the President would listen to my song. I always think how nice it would be if President Kim Il Sung listens to my song."
It was the sincere feeling of the female singer nearing 90 that she would sing songs of President Kim Il Sung as long as her heart beats.
The April Spring Friendship Art Festival has been recorded not only as a grand art festival in praise of the great man but also as a festival of friendship and solidarity encouraging and promoting the art development of the countries and nations and strengthening ties between artistes. Through friendly meetings, aesthetic symposiums on the present times and national arts and the like held during the festivals, Korean artistes and artistes of many countries exchange successes made in the course of art creation and the experiences accumulated in the development of national arts, deepening friendly feelings. That is why the international community and many mass media estimate the April Spring Friendship Art Festival as the "only art Olympic on our planet".
The April Spring Friendship Art Festival will shine in the history of human culture century after century along with the boundless reverence of the progressive humanity of the world for great President Kim Il Sung.
