In the USSR between 1928-1953 under Stalin, consumer goods were largely neglected and I was wondering how people obtained items such as refrigerators and doors and other household items?

They did make some consumer goods. But there simply weren't enough. The original plan was to have, IIRC the 2nd 5 Year Plan concentrate on consumer goods. But the Nazi takeover in Germany scuppered any of those ideas so for the rest of the 30s the USSR basically prepared for war (a good thing too, had this period not been spent in preperation there would have been no question of a Soviet victory against the Nazis).
After the War the Soviet Union was obviously concentrated on rebuilding after a devestating conflict.
So it's understandable why Stalin's 5YPs didn't provide much in the way of consumer goods.

That makes alot of sense, thanks comrade. I know the first plan was just to industrialize Russia and to modernize its agriculture, but the fact that the second plan wanted to focus on consumer goods but couldent due to a Nazi take over of Germany makes alot of sense.:)
