View Full Version : Did Chit Chat Use to be "Worse"?

As you probably know, I am relatively new to the Chit Chat section, as well as the forum in general, so I don't know much about its history. I am always very surprised to see people (sometimes those who post here) discussing Chit Chat as if it is a very dark, scary, and even filthy place. That is not the impression I get of this section at all. I very likely have a large tolerance for general Internet weirdness, but I'm wondering how that is coloring my experience. Am I wrong in characterizing Chit Chat hijinks as "mild"? I have seen much worse on other sites, and I've never even visited 4chan.

Do the offensive threads get trashed or something, because I haven't really seen many, and I read 15+ pages of old threads one day when I was bored. (Or, as I said, it could be that I have a higher tolerance for crap than others.)

Compared to most of the internet it is two mormons discussing rice cakes.

That's how I feel about it, but so often, I see quotes like this one:
my recollection is that it was once visible to all before it became a cesspit of 4-chan style borderline mysoginist crap that was offensive to new female members and lurkers. It was blocked to non members to save embarressment.
This is worded ambiguously and could be referring to the past and Chit Chat has now changed. I'm not really sure.

It's an evil cesspit of vile racism and homophobia, it makes 4chan look tame. Atleast that's what they say.

"Was once"? It's still a massive sausage fest. The only women that post regularly seem to be me and Esperanza, sometimes Iseul and CoTR. Other than that, it's mostly men.

I haven't seen your posts, so I didn't know you were female. Sometimes revleft is utterly depressing because of the lack of women and the massive amount of teenage men. I sometimes feel that feminist issues are very poorly understood.

That is depressing. At least there doesn't seem to be as many occurances of men randomly coming on to women (at least that I've seen) than on NationStates Forum 7. That's pretty much the standard to which I hold this forum and pronounce it tame.

I used to play OGame and had all manner of creepy men come on to me... You should expect a higher standard from leftist men though, in that they shouldn't see you as just a woman they might want to fuck, but a person with valid ideas and opinions. Sexism is thankfully looked down on in this forum, even though it still exists, which is encouraging in that many of the men here do endeavour to understand women and patriarchy. The main issue really is subtle sexism and the refusal to accept that just because you're a leftist who is interested in women's liberation, it doesn't mean that your behaviour can't be sexist. Reading and understanding feminist theory is fine, but applying it to yourself is the most difficult part.

Good point. The main offender on NationStates was a fash (who I was stupid enough to pretend to date for a while), and that really shows.
Do you believe that any men can actually truly understand the female experience without having lived it themselves?

I'm pretty sure that revleft is mostly comprised of 20-somethings more than teenagers.
I think that the discussion level on this site has generally increased, actually, except for Chit Chat, the level of which is basically the same as I remember it from years back. I attribute this to former teenagers like myself becoming increasingly jaded 20-somethings.

Revleft, even in chit-chat, maintains a quality of discussion leaps and bounds beyond the rest of the internet. We do have a problem with sexism, homophobia, and transphobia. That's an ongoing battle. I think we will be seeing that improve in the near future.

I think the discussion has grown worse back when I started hanging/lurking here (when it was che-lives) there was many posters I looked forward to reading their posts. Morpheus, Redstar2000, LSD, old TAT, Sevarian and plenty of others where all posters which wrote interesting posts which took some efforts. Now it seems like half the posts are one liners or users trying to hide an empty argument behind so much "advanced" terminology. Or maybe it's just that I have gone through the same discussions a million times already.
The only posters I find writes interesting posts consistently now are Demogorgon and Syndicat.
But I reckon it's just me getting old and jaded.
PS! I wish Morpheus would post more, it was my favorite poster of all times here.

Why do I have to wade through meaningless irrelevant shit like that to find any relevant comments? Why are such posts allowed on what should be a serious board?
Edit; i went through some more random threads and I realize I was lucky with my random thread (maybe it was my subconscience that predicted a SWP thread would be bad), but I can still find quite a few non-contributing posts in almost every thread.
I would like this forum to have a no-tolerance on noncontributing posts in the serious areas, being a shitty poster should be a much more bannable offence than not having the correct political line. Other forums manage to avoid the lolz posts so this one should as well.

And why do I have to wait 60 seconds between each time I report a post, that shouldn't have been a problem if it weren't so many spam posts that I usually spot more than one every 60th second. The sad thing is that there is a reward (becoming a commited member) to writing tons of short noncontributing posts. This site also showed itself to be to childish to have a rep system as now most rep is probably given out for cheap-shotting other political factions.
For a short period of time awhile ago I used the rep system to hand out negative rep for bad posts, as I think the rep system was for rewarding good posts and punish bad posts, but everyone sent me pissed PMs so I didn't bother anymore. Shouldn't seeing a poster with a ton of rep signify a good poster?
I realize the admins and moderators have plenty of work to do here, but I think it would be easier after some time of hard-lining on short noncontributing posts.

When I went to a thread Louis Henrique posted (Link (http://www.revleft.com/vb/reformism-t39648/index.html?highlight=redstar2000)) I must say that I'm still unconvinced that the discourse in the theory forum these days are any better.
And since I'm in a whiny mood today, can't our mods please start a 2 year period between each time you change your nick. Your nick is a way to separate different posters, not a vessel for your self expression you need to change every day and a half.

It's actually the ratio between rep and post count. If someone has a lot of rep, but twice the posts, that means they make a lot of stupid posts. If your like me and have relatively not a whole lot of rep, but it's much more than your post count, then you must be so cool that you should be an admin like right now.
