I've read Deutschers Stalin biography but seeing as how Deutscher was a Trotskyist it was very biased. I'm trying to get hold of Deutschers 3 volume biography on Trotsky, but the only one I can find is pretty expensive. Is it worth a read or is it just Deutscher complimenting Trotsky for 3 books?

Deutscher wasn't a Trot. He was certainly anti Stalin but he wasn't anti communist (he wrote a good critical review of The God That Failed.)

His biography of Trotsky is sympathetic and critical; certainly it's the most comprehensive biography of Trotsky available.

Great book. I don't know whether Deutscher's book on Stalin is biased on not because that's the only serious book I've read on Stalin.

I've not read it but I'd be surprised if Deutscher's work was overly biased. It is after all still commonly citied (and certainly not just on RevLeft) as the standard biography of Trotsky's life

From what I've read of his biography on Stalin, it seems like one of the most objective books on the topic.

I've heard similar things about The Prophet series. And if I recall correctly, I remember reading a review written by a Trotskyist who said that it was too critical. Hah.
