Update a Garmin Sat Nuvi Nav free?

I've recently acquired a Garmin Nuvi satellite navigation unit but the maps are a few years out of date and it would cost way more than the device is worth to update them by the official route.

Does anyone have any step by step instructions that work for updating maps on a Garmin Sat Nav for free?
