I have been in contact with union members for a while now, some of them happy with it, other where not.

From my understanding, the problem isnt the Unions , but the tool the state in wich they operate give them to work with.

Have you talked with the shop rep? Get involved, have enough people write to the Union, or your regional rep, people listen when you talk, especially in Unions, sometimes thats all it takes.

there are several truck drivers member of the teamster union delivering good at the store where i work.

they talk to me about the unions, the problem with the bosses and also the problem they encounter with their unions.

there seem to be two recurrent problems, first when the union is big like the one of the teamster, democracy dosnt really work well when someone from the top is a crony, and second its seem to be damn hard to deal with the people who dosnt give a shit about the small number of worker and do a sloppy job.

You'd be supprised what you can get done by getting involved, I don't know about the Canadian teamsters but in the US the teamsters have a democracy movement within the Union, if there is one in Canada, its good to get involved in that and take part in the elections, and let people know that your gonna be involved and your gonna take part.

Organizing within unions is just as important as organizing unions.

That's the usual problem I hear about unions--it's just another bearuocracy on top of the beruocracy of work. Large unions usually aren't interested in anything besides the big companies, and small unions are ineffective.

Really? The biggest gains in labor recently have been smaller unions.

Large Unions are not universally non democratic, there are plently of large unions that have a strong democratic tradition and are held accountable, but there are some (and the teamsters are notorius for this) that are non-democratic.

Many unions have forgotten why they were formed. Union leaders became union bosses no different than the CEOs at the end of the day.
