Funny how the author tries to deny Communist achievements repeatedly.

I'm really not sure what this article is actuallysupposed to be about. There's certainly some interesting content in there, but the writer just wanders back and forth, too afraid of actually delving into social-cultural complexities- especially not those that might reflect positively on a Marxist-Leninist regime- to actually say anything, so it just ends up as a list of interesting but aimless observations.

I think what she is trying to say is that it sucked then and it sucks now thouh it sucked less then than now.
