View Full Version : US Government Shutdown: Distraction or Opportunity?

Here in the States there has been incessant chatter about a "government shut down."

It's not that we'll stop bombing, murdering and exploiting, it's just that we may have to wind down the "non-essential" services, like processing tax refunds and what not.

So the question I have for "y'all" is this: is there a genuine chance that this shutdown might be a revolutionary catalyst or will it just wind up as another game of "Republicans versus Democrats"?

This whole shutdown pisses me off, we can't keep the government running because we don't want to keep pay for social services for our most vulnerable and yet we want to keep killing people and blowing shit up. Anyone who votes for wars and against SS,healthcare, and other services for those who need them can just go to hell.

It will, in my opinion, without a shadow of a doubt be another Jackass vs. Dumbo political party shit-flinging contest.

In the interest of conversing about voting, I'd be much obliged to agree. However, even if me an' you go out and vote Dem to get things like that accomplished, look where it get's us. Nowhere.

How could it be an opportunity? Americans will forget about it in like a month or two. They only pay attention to crises when the media tells them to.

Well, it depends on what opportunity you are looking at. The thing is the media has been using the term "shutdown" loosely because it doesn't mean things will come to a grinding halt, but rather the federal government will stop services it doesn't consider essential- i.e. social programs.

Both sides are trying to get the blame for a shutdown if it occurs on the other side because it's a massive smear on them. The Republicans learned this the hard way back when a shutdown occurred in 1995 that really messed up their candidates and incumbents running in the 1996 house elections.

So in regard to the OP it seems it'll be another Dem v. Rep shitfeud the way things are developing. It could be used as a springboard for agitation by groups, on top of what they've been trying to do currently, to further point out to people who really has to pay for the recession at the end of the day- I mean how fast did the US react to keeping the banks from collapsing, compared to social programs and things citizens rely on? With the exception of a few thoroughly brainwashed tea-party types, most people could relate to that.

Just until the Dems decide to throw planned parenthood overboard. Shouldn't be too long.

It's an opportunity for Democrats to pass the cuts they would do anyway while pretending to fight for our interests: "vote democrat we only gave into 90% of the things you hate!"
