I started listening to them around when Bastard was released by way of last.fm. At first I didn't like Bastard that much and passed it off as average. Then when EARL was released I started to get into them more.

Media hype and indie-music blogger-bait.
Average beats and lyrics for all the hype they get, but good cover-art and I read that they have a good stage show.
IMO.
I also think I resent them mostly for the hype. The US rock press just spend over a decade pretending that hip-hop doesn't exist and now they are pissing themselves to get piece of the action. I don't see the draw other than the sensationalism.

Silly hipster.
I do tend to fall into some hater-ism when it comes to pop-culture.
But I'm much better than I was when I was right out of high school. But that was before the modern boy-band/pop-female singer wave and Limp Bizkit and Crazytown and I didn't realize how shitty pop-music could get.

Their stuff is cool, hipster irony + the kind of dark humor that was popular in late 70's - early 80's USSR. At least it's not horrorcore/Eminem-type stuff even though it seems like that. A lot of people who are into regular hip-hop hate it/don't get how it's popular though lol.

Shock value, but don't bring up the fact that they talk about murder and misanthropy because misogyny is apparently the only thing that's "morally" wrong.

Rapeing women as a lyrical theme isn't all that "daring" considering how often it happens in pop-culture (and in real life unfortunately)... more shock-value/exploitative maybe. If they started making songs about raping men... that might be more shocking and interesting and I wonder how bloggers and Pitchfork would respond to that.

I'm gonna get them to sign my Vans when they perform in Amsterdam, the show will be free too, I will be in the front getting hit in the face when they stagedive. It's gonna be swagged out.
I'm actually thinking about paying money for Goblin. After all the shit they did for free, I kinda feel obliged.

Are you familiar with the idea of gangsta rap absurdism? Because that's basically 90% of what they do artistically.
Lol I played this to some black friends who rap/make hip hop beats but never really listened to indie and to them the most provocative parts were where they diss Our Lord And Savior Jesus Christ, where Tyler says he is an "emo faggot" (that last word is in the songs a lot too) and how the Yonkers video has 5 million views despite them not giving a fuck about the things rappers care about.

Are you familiar with the idea of gangsta rap absurdism? Because that's basically 90% of what they do artistically.Yeah, just by virtue of my age, I am familiar... I had NWA on tape, yes tape! NWA was shocking at the time as were Prince Paul, ODB and tons of other groups and performers in the past...
It's just a beautiful night for a date rape
A beautiful night, for a kill
It's a beautiful night for a homicide
A beautiful night, let's go steal
Well it's a beautiful night, to kill crackers
It's just a beautiful night
So I don't know if it's just that I'm old an un-impressed like the guys I'd meet back in the day who'd be like: "Bah, Nirvana, they're just this band plus that band and let me tell you about seeing the Germs back in 79!" or "That rap song is just some old James Brown with someone talking over it". Or maybe it's just a case of being down so long it looks like up to us: people got so used to the stale mainstream auto-tuned/self-indulgent hip-hop of the last 12 years and forgot what youthful rebellion in music looked like.
Also, when the NYT, Pitchfork and NPR are all telling us that a certain rap crew is the "next big thing" I get a little suspicious.

In all seriousness, don't mind them. Massive hipster bait (maybe why I've got a slight affinity towards them...), but they've got a fair few decent tracks. The fact that Earl Sweatshirt was only 16 when he put out EARL is pretty impressive. Don't get the huge hype about them, especially some comparisons to Wu Tang. But hey, live and let be, right?

I jumped, I moshed, I sweated, I stagedived. And I met them after the show. I went for some Burger King, went back to the building and they were just coming out. I got a picture with me and Tyler, we bumped fists and he told me to "keep swagging it out."
Best concert ever.
Syd opened up by playing Flocka, SpaceGhostPurrp and Lil B and already people started moshing, like a half hour later Tyler, Hodgy and Left Brain came out and shit got really crazy.

What is here is more promise than delivery, yet it's still a game-changing record for indie hip-hop-- a singular and sonically complex album neither in hoc to 1986-88 "real" hip-hop nor created by rappers aiming to define themselves in opposition to the mainstream. (It takes about three minutes for Tyler to align himself with other artists here, but he chooses Erykah Badu, Pusha T, and Waka Flocka Flame instead of Immortal Technique.) Alongside Lil B and Soulja Boy, OFWGKTA are harnessing the Internet to communicate directly and often and pushing a new kind of indie hip-hop-- often rambling, not always musical, frequently surprising, and absolutely beloved by some. It takes work to get through, and a lot of its success rests on cult of personality. Those two barriers are particularly why it's so successful: You have to commit to it in many ways. You have to want to be an insider. And that's a club that's quickly expanding.

Ok I just listened to Goblin again and I actually really enjoy tracks 1-6 (Goblin-Nightmare? I dunno I downloaded it for free so my tracklist might be messed up). The rest of the album can explode for all I care.
Did they use a different producer for the second half because it just seems really inconsistent. First six tracks are really nicely put together, the drums are hard but not overwhelming, the synth sounds are shit ugly but they still kind of blend in nicely, oh and there are no shitty guest spots either. Second half just sounds like a small child got hold of some analogue drum emulator plugins for his computer, tried to make a few dirty South style beats and had his older brother (who in all likelihood, is an emo, by the way) drom some bars over them. Should've kept the same producer all the way through if this is the case, album would've been fire.
I was wrong that this album completely sucks, I definitely think it's a lot better than Bastard or anything else OF have released thus far. But I do stand by what I said, I don't think they can possibly last. One or two members might hit big and stick around but teams like this don't last.

False.
Well, it was meant more as a statement of opinion than a statement of fact. Lyrically I think it's weak but I'll still listen to it a whole lot more than the 500 other mixtapes and LPs they've released.
Don't get me wrong, I know I'm coming across like I'm hating right now, I'm not, I think they can be good, maybe they can even be great. But I'm realistic, unless your team's name is Cold Crush, Wu-Tang or BDP, you can't expect to achieve greatness with the first or second round of albums. If in a few years they've stopped relying on shock value we'll see how good they are at making Hip Hop.

As much as I wish Chris Brown would just jump off a very tall building sometimes, I really think he was just trying to make a compliment
He had a twitter feud with OF before talking about how he's sick of "all this satanic music".
His compliments were clearly very backhanded. Trying to ease things from the last clash. Frank Ocean saw right through him.
I laughed my ass off at the Ike Turner thing.

You really dont know who Ike Turner is? He was Tina Turner's husband. He also beat up his girlfriend.
What really irks me is when people whine how it's mean to bring up the fact he beat Rihanna up. Fuck that. What's mean is him doing that shit. Fuck Chris Brown.

Oh no I know who Ike Turner is, what I meant was I didn't know there was already bad blood between Chris Brown and Odd Future, which is why I got the impression Chris Brown was just being nice in what he said about Frank Ocean.
And yeah I agree about him beating up Rihanna, if people don't like the fact that it's easy to criticise him for it then they know whose fault that is. Chris Brown is fair game.

Oh ok I figured that was just some other guy from Odd Future I didn't know that
Haven't been to a show yet. There was one a few months back which was like five or six members but I had a wedding party to go to. I know somebody who went and they said that while it was a very very good show, the audience was basically shit. I really don't have an issue with being at a show with young white people, I am after all young and white myself but I do like to be in an audience of like-minded people. I guess I'm shallow but that kind of thing really effects me, I feel at home when I go to see people like Mos Def, Wu-Tang, Doom, stuff that really only hardcore Hip Hop fans would pay money to see.
Meh, I'll probably go and just stand in a dark corner sipping my lemonade. I would probably regret not going on the offchance that it's going to be filled with people I don't like.

Haha yeah but you live in the Netherlands, as far as audience goes shows seem to be really good there regardless of the type of crows they attract. I've been to the Paradiso twice and Melkwag once and each time almost everyone there just seemed really chill, like they were there solely to enjoy the music and have a good time. There were lots of young people but virtually no hyperactive teenagers shouting in your ear and spilling their drink on you. Things are a little different here in the UK.

Tyler The Creator is a fucking homophobe and frankly, I don't see how people on this board can support him so avidly as to have pictures taken of themselves with him. His homophobic comment on Tegan and Sara after they pointed out his homophobic lyrics disgusted me. Even if it was supposed to be a "joke" (which I don't believe), it was an insensitive and homophobic comment. If that "joke" had been targeted towards African-Americans it would not have been taken so lightheartedly.

He's friends with a lesbian. Syd the Kyd, his DJ/producer, is an important part of OF.
He has multiple times denied being a homophobe.
He said homophobia and racism are equally bad on his Formspring.
I can take photos with anyone I want, fuck your opinion and fuck you.
Apart from the word "faggot", which he says he doesnt mean homosexual to him, his lyrics arent homophobic at all.

1. That's the same as when a racist says "I have lots of friends that are black"
2. Of course he has.
3. He also said the aforemention statement on Twitter which was obviously homophobic.
4. Of course you can, I'll just think less of you for it.
5. The word means what the word means. I couldn't go around saying the n-word and than just say "I didn't mean it to be racist". As a homosexual I think I can say what offends me. The word "faggot" is a slur just like the n-word and carries a negative connotation and is bound to offend a group of people. He knows that. The statement he posted about Tegan and Sara was obviously ignorant and homophobic and he never apologized. He's an ignorant bigot.

I think he does a lot of things for shock value, in some cases I approve, in others I don't. But he's not the first rapper to be branded a homophobe and he won't be the last. I'm hardly an expert on Odd Future, I really enjoy some of their music and I really dislike some of it and that's about it, but what I do know is they strike me as a really open minded group of people and I seriously doubt Tyler is the homophobe you are making him out to be. Basically if I was a homophobic rapper I wouldn't even want gay people to come to my shows, let alone to stand up there on stage with me like their lesbian DJ does.
My opinion is that when it comes to art and music, and offensive word is fair game. Now if I were to sit down and have a totally serious discussion about equality issues with Tyler and he used a word like faggot then I might consider him a homophobe.
When it comes to Tegan and Sara, I read their rant and I thought it was pure sensationalism comparing use of the word faggot to racism and anti-semitism without even taking context into consideration, as far as I am aware Tyler has never made an explicitly anti-homosexuality song. Something I can personally attest to is when you come from a troubled neighbourhood faggot is just another insult, and when you direct that word at somebody, the chances are good you are not actually accusing them of being gay. Maybe I'm a reactionary but I have to admit I actually laughed at Tyler's response.
I don't really let politics influence my music tastes but I would feel extremely uncomfortable listening to something which blatantly promoted anti-gay attitudes.

How is it pure sensationalism? Homophobia is just as serious an issue as racism. The context is very clear, he's using the word faggot as an insult.

Maybe I'm a reactionary but I have to admit I actually laughed at Tyler's response.
I find it disgusting that you laughed at that, it was highly offensive. The usage of the word faggot is not magically changed when you're dealing with troubled neigbourhoods, in these areas you'll also find increased levels of violent homophobia. They're still using it as an insult. Why do they choose that word? They're equating homosexuals with "sissies" or "cowards" depending on the situation they're using it in. They're calling someone a faggot because they're saying the way they're acting is like that of a gay person. Once again, I think your stance would be different if we were talking about the n-word.
Spawn of Stalin

My view of white people saying a potentially offensive word like nigger is basically the same as 50 Cent's
_4mu_ip2maw
It depends of who you are and what you mean by it. Personally I don't use that word around even the black people I grew up with, though not necessarily because I avoid that word, I'm 99% sure I've used it in some way shape or form in the past and I've never had any problems with being accused of racism by my friends. I would use it around people I know, but I would never walk up to a random black guy and use it.
So, in the same way that it depends on the context in which Tyler is using these potentially offensive words, I'm absolutely ok with white people dropping n-bombs. In fact I can think of more than a few occasions where Latino rappers have done that in their songs and I haven't even given it a second thought.

Yes of course it is a serious issue, I agree with that but it has been established that Tyler is not a homophobe....
Basically if I was a homophobic rapper I wouldn't even want gay people to come to my shows, let alone to stand up there on stage with me like their lesbian DJ does.
....do you not agree with this statement?
I find it disgusting that you laughed at that, it was highly offensive. The usage of the word faggot is not magically changed when you're dealing with troubled neigbourhoods, in these areas you'll also find increased levels of violent homophobia.
Homophobia is everywhere, frankly I find it offensive that you think it's more common in lower working class neightbourhoods. I've been called words associated with homophobia by people who know for a fact that I am not gay.
They're still using it as an insult. Why do they choose that word?
It's Hip Hop, you'll find that some Hip Hop is full of insults. Why choose any word? I am not offended when black rappers use words which could be associated by some ignorant people with anti-white racism, that is, unless I know that these black rappers are racists.
They're equating homosexuals with "sissies" or "cowards" depending on the situation they're using it in. They're calling someone a faggot because they're saying the way they're acting is like that of a gay person.
I think you need to actually listen to the lyrics a bit harder before you go making judgement calls. And I don't think that Tyler is so stupid to think that gay people act a certain way

Refer to the first definition. This is exactly how Odd Future and most rappers use the word. There is definitely shock value tied into the usage but they are by no means intentionally insulting LGBT people.

thing is other rappers use faggot all the time and tbh if u asked most their actual views on homosexuality, u would get response like "its not natural blahdiblah"
the differnece is middle class liberals seem to love Odd Future for some reason (e.g. look at the number of Guardian articles they get) so they hear it
Considering that Tyler has said he doesnt have an actual problem with homosexuality and a member of the group is gay, hes one of the less homophobic rappers around because most say faggot and have actual homophobic views (judging from interviews)
