The Zionist-Liberal "Peace Now" movment has organized a big protest march in Tel Aviv under the title "Save The State - Get Out of The [Occupied] Territories!". I personally couldn't get there, because the is no public transportation on Shabat and they didn't send busses to my small & f*cked-up town. According to the reports I heard there were 10,000 people on this demonstration.
If I'm not mistaken "In Defence of Marxism Circle" (CMI) attended this demonstration, but that's it for the extreme left. Peace Now actually announced they're going to organize this march after the Communist Party announced it is going to organize a (smaller) israeli-palestinian demonstration against the occupation infront of Kalandia's barrier. Peace Now said "we want to have no connection with the dirty extreme anti-zionist left". Therefore the demonstration hasn't reached it's full potential, and remained mainly jewish since the main political forces among the arab population (the Communist Party, the Islamic Movment and the National Democratic Alliance) were left out because they were "non-patriotic dirty anti-zionists".
The first half of the title ("Save the State") also shows that Peace Now are representing the bourgeoise class, it's liberal part which can benefit from an Oslo-like agreement.
Nevertheless, the fact that Peace Now and this demonstration particulary dragged so many workers show that the israeli working-class is tired of this war. The small efforts of the consistent peace activists are begining to grow, from few hundred demonstrators from "Co-Existance" ("Ta'ayush"), "Peace Bloc" and the Communist Party to mass demonstrations like these. This movement might become so big, like in Lebanon War, that it will bring the withdraw of the IDF from the occupied territories and dismantle the settlements.
We have lots of struggle ahead of us, but this night is a very important night for the struggle for peace in the Middle East. It gives hope and shows that in the future the bloodshed might end and Socialism will take it's place.
