CHICAGO, March 31 (UPI) -- Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan expressed support for Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi at a rare news conference at the organization's Chicago mosque.

Describing Gadhafi as a "brother leader," Farrakhan told the assemblage: "It is a terrible thing for me to hear my brother called all these ugly and filthy names when I can't recognize him as that. Even though the current tide is moving against him ... how can I refuse to raise my voice in his defense? Why would I back down from those who have given so much?" the Chicago Tribune reported.

The Mosque Maryam where Farrakhan maintains his international headquarters was purchased with a $3 million loan from Gadhafi.

Gadhafi praised Farrakhan in 1997 for being a "courageous freedom fighter" who rallied Islamic communities around the world.

Farrakhan is an opportunist, but he has close to zero geopolitical clout. This "news" is just used for the continued demonization of Gadhaffi, and sway public opinion towards the opposition. Farrakhan is seen as a loony black racist by the mainstream liberal press.

So the rebels are backed by the western imperialists, the CIA and the NSFL, but they have the "balls" to fight against a dictator so that makes them worth supporting and cancels out all the mass racist killings they've been carrying out? please source the "minority group" claim, all the major citys outside tripoli openly support the uprising, from tripoli we dont know although the fact that journalists are barred from entering the workingclass neighborhoods and the fact they are only allowed to speak with instructed supporters who almost all happen to be state/security personnel or petit-bourgeois makes my highly doubt your claim.

i dont deny that gadaffi has his support, but so did mumbarak, batista and the tsar...

edit: not wanting to make this in a silly numbers game but even if 100% of the tripoli population would support gadaffi only benghazi en misarata combined have already more than half a milion more citizens than tripoli, not to speak about all the other rebellious city's, if you include only al bayda already more than 2/3 of the population live in an area not longer under gadaffi's control, there is no way you can defend your claim that the rebels are an minority group, if so the the rebels would already have been smashed from the inside weeks ago.
