1/ Davin released – Kitchener cops are brutal

Davin Charney was released yesterday without charge after spending 3 hours in police custody. He was arrested for obstruct police and breach of bail. The arrest occurred after he refused to hand over a camera that was being used to document the violent arrest of a young guy named Joey (later released on a Promise to Appear).

The incident occurred in downtown Kitchener, on the same street corner where a riot nearly broke out last week after the arrest of two young women. At least 11 cops were called in to deal with a crowd of people expressing their anger with daily police harassment, brutality and power tripping.

It all began when Cst. Hinsperger stopped a young man for riding a bicycle on the sidewalk. The cop then held him to check if the bike was stolen (he was later told that he could go). A crowd soon gathered to monitor the cops, who often stop people for no reason and hassle them. Cst. Fenton arrived in a cruiser to provide back up. A few minutes later Fenton grabbed Joey and together with Cst. Hinsperger they forcefully arrested him, allegedly for theft. Davin took photos of the arrest. During the arrest, Cst. Clement and Sgt. Hasburger arrived, and they both grabbed Davin and said theywere seizing
his camera as evidence. They said that they would arrest him if he didn’t hand it over. After some arm-twisting, the cops took the camera, but arrested Davin anyway. He was taken to Division 1, strip searched, photographed, fingerprinted, and told that he was being held overnight. This meant that he would be held at Maplehurst jail for up to a week waiting for a bail hearing.

After a few hours, Sgt Hienz came and told Davin that he was being released without charge. The Sgt said that he had spoken with Bill Wilson, the head crown attorney for Kitchener, and that the cops were now not sure if they were going to lay charges. Davin was told that after the crown attorney checks some case law, the cops might come and arrest him again next week.

This arrest demonstrates how the cops are attempting to break up our Cop Watch program and sieze evedence that shows thier brutality.

Last Tuesday, the cops beat and arrested 2 people with hours of each other in downtown Kitchener. In one incident 3 cops beat up one guy who has already been hand-cuffed, right on King St. A few hours later, another guy was ‘close lined’ during an arrest. He fell to the ground and lay motionless for at least 10 minutes until he was taken to hospital in an ambulance.

2/ Free Amanda

On Wednesday, Amanda Lamka was arrested for fail to appear and breach of bail. Lots of kids run from group homes but go unnoticed by the cops. Amanda is being targeted because of her involvement with the K-W Youth Collective and the Spot. She will appear in bail court this Wednesday, September, 24th.

On Thursday, the Youth Collective showed up at her first court appearance. We protested outside the court house with signs that said “Free Amanda – Jail the Cops”, “Free Amanda, Prisoner of Family and Children Services” and “Free Amanda – Support the Spot”. Amada appeared defiant in court despite being in hand-cuffs and leg shackles. As she left the courtroom she raised her fist. Later that day at the Spot, as scheduled, the Youth Collective unanimously voted in Amanda for a staff position.

3/ Vote Julian

More than 15 independent youth candidates are running in the upcoming provincial election. Julian Ichim is running against Elizabeth Witmer in K-W representing the views of the Youth Collective. A vote for the mainstream parties is a vote for capitalism. Instead - vote for Julian.

Victory belongs to the people!
