So "the" American news paper, the new york times, is going to start charging for reading online just like those other capitalist rags, the wall street journal and the economist. I'm curious to hear what cappies here think of this move. Why is advertisement no longer working to sustain the paper? Or is it not losing money? When they tried this with the columnists it didn't work and unless you have a very specialized website like the new scientist or the wsj is it really worth people's money? And what do you suppose this "portends for the future of journalism?"

The Wall Street Journal has gone down hill recently, the Financial Times in my opinion is a better gague of what the ruling class is thinking, the Wall Street Journal still is a pretty good gague, but Rupert Murdoch has kind of changed it.

As for the NYT, this sort of thing is inevitable, print circulation is down, advertisements are probably not enough either.

The financial paradigm has changed in recent years for newspapers. Nothing good or bad about that. It's just how business works. The papers are all trying tofind a new way to market their wares.

Actually what the Times is doing is closer to the more competitivemodel that had been the history of newspapers up until the last 40 years or so when a couple of media companies had news coverage sewed up. NBC, ABC, CBS, the Times the W Post, all had a corner on the media for a long period in the mid to late 20th century.

That's over and it's a more competitive and diverse market now as it was in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Well see how things go for the Times and if they can adapt to new markets.

Well I won't be reading it anymore. Thing is there is evidence that papers that have started charging for online content have lost more advertising revenue (due to fewer people signing up) than they have gained in subscription fees, so we may see an end to this trend soon.

Honestly the NY times, WSJ and the big capitalist news papers are in my opinion going down, there is a lot of way more exciting media out there that has a much less ruling class based perspective.

I think it's unfortunate the times is charging, though it is america's paper imo.
