Odd situation for me I guess. I've never understood all the teachings in class, which always parroted he evils of communism and socialism. Whenever a tutor would describe communism as a system where everyone is equal and no one is different, yet would turn around and call it the most horrible system ever, I could never understand that line of thought.

Fast forward 10 years and I still don't get it, but have more or less determined that my beliefs lay heavily in Socialism.

However, here is my dilemma. I can't express my leftist beliefs, due to the fact that I'm surrounded by right-minded bigots. As I'm writing this right now I'm sitting in a Introductory Sociology class (I'm going back to school for a medical degree, engineering didn't cut it for me), and the professor is the most righty person I have ever heard!

He honestly just said this:
"Honestly, how Karl Marx ever thought communism would work is just absurd. He didn't have the slightest idea of the workings of humanity." He's spouted other gems but I try to ignore them. Every class he manages to spend about an hour complaining about socialists, socialism, state capitalism, welfare capitalism, and a variety of other 'isms.

Combine that with my current job climate where I hear nothing but Obama-care and how he's a socialist... I just want to scream "WHAT IS SO WRONG WITH SOCIALISM!" However, being as that I don't live and work in a very... uh... open minded area, that's not such a good idea.

Meh, I'm just trying to reach out to like minded individuals in a world where I feel that I'm the only American socialist.

Welcome to Revleft here. I think you'll find the forum helpful for learning more and connecting with other leftists, might make you feel better about your situation.

Sad part is that re-reading this introduction, I come off as whiney. Not my intention. Just overly frustrated.

You are most definitively not the sole American communist. Hell, tell us where you live, and we may be able to hook you up with leftist organizations.

I don't think you come off as too terribly whiny. A lot of us American comrades really understand where you're coming from. I hope we can help you feel less alone.:)

Yeah, that. But I'm sure you've already googled for local groups, right?

Maybe he has, but I went though a similar phase and it can be so disheartening you don't even thing of doing something so obvious. And, OP, don't worry about being tracked: being here alone is enough to get you into a hundred blacklists. :D

I doubt that he'll get black listed at all for just being on this forum. And it's kinda hard to give that "knowing" look when I'm not typing in third person. "Maybe you should google that, right?" winked Rooster knowingly. Yeah but seriously, don't worry about it too much.

Also, OP, feel free to ask anything (unless it's about dialectical materialism). Have you read any Marx yourself?

Why not dialectical materialism? Why should he be denied our petty rights!?
but seriously, though, ask away.

You haven't been here or very long, have you?

Welcome! I too live in a very Reactionary area (and openly racist to boot!), and it's not ideal to say the least. We have a Tea Partyer in Congress and several members of the local boy scout troop are openly racist, scout and leader alike. Most are quite nationalistic as well.

Surprisingly, at least among those my age, my Commutasitc outlook has been met with jokes and light-hearted taunts of 'Commie Bastard', but no real anger or malice. Point is, all hope is not lost. I suggest revealing your views slowly, don't come out of the blue and start singing the anthem of the socialist world republic. It might help soften the response of those more rightist. That's just my experience so do what you feel is right.

Welcome OP. Your prof sounds like a clown. Good thing the academic job market is heavily state-subsidized and -regulated. Elsewise he'd likely be digging ditches like a common illegal.

You can tell him I said that.

Why not dialectical materialism?

lolz.

Deep South right here, totally know where you're coming from. Let us know where you're at more generally and maybe we can hook you up with a group.

Am I picking up on something in this statement? :glare:

Anyway, welcome to the board. Whiny? No. Frustrated like the rest of us? Yes! :)
