The saber rattling types here in the US exuberantly claim that Muammar Gaddafi is personally responsible for the 1988 destruction of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie Scotland. In this morning's edition of the San Diego Union Tribune, there was a piece claiming that any and all US attacks on Libya are retaliation against them for this attack. So I'm wondering, who was responsible for the bombing? Are the accusations against Gaddafi totally baseless, or is there anything substantive to their claims? Any help on this would be much appreciated.

The only "evidence" of it being Gaddafi's making has recently come out during the Middle Eastern revolts. There has been no "evidence" prior to the revolts. I believe the same people, Swedish news team, that claims to have heard it from a member of the Libyan government is also the same group that labeled Julian Assange a rapist. And if "any and all US attacks on Libya are retaliation against them for this attack" is true, why didn't they attack Libya in 1988? And if the evidence is just coming out now, that seems a bit too coincidental.

The most likely theory to me is that it was a revenge attack for the shooting down of Iran Air Flight 655 by the US military earlier that year.
