In the North, white people may not use the n-word. But yet they don't like to live around black people either.

Yes, this is true. It is in part because of forced de-segragation in the South, but also because I feel that Northerners are equally racist. Despite the fact that the North is seen as less outwardly racist, but many people are extremely closeted about their racism. "I don't dislike black people, I just don't want to live near them because we're culturally different." That's still racist. I live in NY #2 and segregation is really horrible. Some real estate agents won't sell to blacks in areas like the North Shore of Nassau county (which is relatively affluent compared to the city). I believe that it was Nassau which was the most segregated county in the country. Its disgusting.

I live in a small metropolitan-area city outside of NY, pop. a little over 29,000 with 35.7% black about 10% Latino and is totally unsegregated. I think in bigger cities you will tend to find ethnic enclaves especially from newly emigrants.

My family is from New York state and I can say from personal experience that as someone who grew up being upper middle class in the US South, I have experienced much more ethnic and economic diversity than any of my upper middle class family members in New York state.

Funny - or sad, depending. If you look closely at the map of NYC you can see that Central Park is marked as a highly segregated area. I suppose this is based on the recent census data which does include whoever happened to be sleeping in the Park at that time...
