Former president Jimmy Carter has arrived in Cuba on a three-day, non-governmental visit.
Carter, who is accompanied by his wife, Rosalynn, will meet with President Raul Castro and other Cuban officials.
It is Carter’s second trip to the island. In 2002, he met with then-President Fidel Castro and addressed the public at the University of Havana. He is the only U.S. president to visit Cuba.
After arrival with wife Rosalynn, Carter’s first public event will be with Havana’s Jewish community.

Gotta admit, I cried when he went out on the stage at the Democratic convention. They wouldn't let him speak b/c of the Palestine: Peace or Apartheid book but they couldn't stop him going on stage - and the crowd went nuts for him. All the ambitious people were out of the room as they didn't want to be caught on camera and from the look of it all that was left was teacher's union members and blacks. Which, given the makeup of Democratic convention delegates, was still a fuck-lot of people.
In its own confused way, it was a profound, defiant statement of proletarian internationalism.

So when he gets home, are they going to fine him for violating the embargo?

Carter was as anti-Communist as it comes. I don't give a fuck if he's had some sort of epiphany in his old age. What the fuck has he ever done for anyone except his own political ambitions and big business?

Not really anything, in terms of himself personally or his conduct in office. But the entire post-1980 political consensus in the US has been built on agreement by all parties and the capitalist media that Jimmy Carter was a big dope and not militarist enough, while Reagan was fukn awesome. So a half-empty stadium coming to its feet for Carter is a pretty radical statement under present conditions. And yes, I realize how sad that is.
