This was obviously done so, not just as a means of justifying the Sheriff's thuggish tactics against the Hispanic population in Arizona, but also as a publicity stunt for Steven Seagal's tv cop show.

Sheriff Arpaio raids Arizona home with tanks, helped by Steven Seagal
March 22, 2011

PHOENIX Sheriff Joe Arpaio rolled out the tanks to take down a man suspected of cockfighting.

West Valley residents in the neighborhood are crying foul after armored vehicles, including a tank, rolled into their neighborhood to make the bust.

Neighbor Debra Ross was so worried she called 911 and went outside where a nearby home had its windows blown out, was crawling with dozens of SWAT members in full gear, armored vehicles and a bomb robot.

When the tank came in and pushed the wall over and you see whats in there, and all it is, is a bunch of chickens, Ross said.

In a massive show of force on Monday, the Maricopa County Sheriffs Office executed a search warrant and arrested the homeowner, Jesus Llovera, on charges of suspected cockfighting.

Llovera was alone in the house at the time of the arrest, and he was unarmed.

I think taxpayers should be shocked, said Robert Campus, Lloveras attorney. Campus said he believes the operation costs tens of thousands of dollars.

Deputies had no probable cause to believe Llovera was armed or dangerous, according to Campus.

Campus said he believes the entire scene was basically a stage, to help actor Steven Seagals TV show, Lawman.

Seagal was riding in the tank.

The Sheriffs Department has entered into a contract with Seagal and part of that contract gives Seagal carte blanche to go along with the sheriff as he arrests people.

Thousands of dollars in damages were made to the property and 115 birds were euthanized on the spot.

Llovera was convicted of a misdemeanor last year of attending a cockfight and has no history of owning weapons.

Yet the sheriffs office said they had reasons to believe Llovera might be armed.

Were going to err on the side of caution. Were going to make sure that we have the appropriate amount of force in case we do run into anything like that, said Sgt. Jesse Spurgin.

Personally, I think revleft should place a sub-thread specifically on police brutality/police state, etc. It's an important topic that's still very much a problem, not just here in the States, but in the world as well.

I agree completely with TVM.

Sub-thread, or sub-forum? Quite honestly we could have a latter considering the scale of police brutality, and the scope for anti-repression politics. Something covering the gamut from coalitions against police brutality to support for WikiLeaks to support for Bradley Manning, to support for the Palestinian and Colombian solidarity activists from St. Louis? Maybe "State Repression"?

Either way, I believe revleft needs it. Like I stated, which you agree, the issue of police brutality/police state, etc. is a very serious issue today.

@Kiroff: nah. Every time I think of Arizona now, I think of this:

115 birds were euthanized on the spot.

Wait a second. They roll into this neighborhood with armored cars, SWAT teams, a robot, and a tank to capture a man who doesn't have a record of violence(Only of attending a cock fight) because he's part of a cockfighting ring and they kill 115 birds right there on the spot? Anybody else see that as a little ironic?

That's completely ridiculous for that amount of force to be used on one guy, especially since he doesn't have a history of violence. If Steven Seagal hadn't been there with his stupid show there might have been a few cop cars there, which is also ridiculous.

If Steven Seagal wasn't there, Arpaio would've never had justification behind such force. To me, that's the point. It was one of those "I scratch your back, you scratch mine" type scenarios.

Cop #1: You know what Larry, it really gets me to see people hurting these poor defenseless creatures. I am glad we nailed that bastard before he could hurt another animal.
Cop #2: So what should we do with all these chickens now?
Cop #1: well we could find a shelter..........fuck it, just kill them all.

This is a nightmare scenario- if I had seen it with my own eyes it I would think I was having some sort of drug fueled hallucination. It would almost be funny if it weren't so fucked up. I mean...really? Fucking Ku Klux Kowboy bravado on crack. Depressing. Very depressing.

Clearly there's support in the sub-thread/sub-forum idea for the topic "police brutality/police state". Can someone see if a mod will accept this?

...With tanks...

This is disturbing. I can't even begin to formulate how disgraceful this act of brutality was. I don't care that it was - officially - some kind of publicity stunt; this kind of action is...:cursing:

I'd like to second (third/fourth/etc.) that idea.
