Great stuff. The location we're holding it is perfect as the centre is near the bus station, too. As you said, many couldn't get to London so I thought it'd be good to hold one in the North. Please do spread the word if you can.

Thanks for the morale boosts too :)

You can see here how close the location is to the bus station: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-5ZMk-JK3ygk/TY6sr_eUxOI/AAAAAAAAACU/beDg2H4ekRY/s1600/Location+Satellite.jpg

Have you got a target, or is it a gathering for gathering's sake?

March. March up to the council offices/Conservative consitutency HQ etc. Otherwise it's a gathering with absolutely no direction.

Get yourself a speaker's platform. Organise people to speak at it - invite a student, a health worker, someone from a trade union. This is important.

Edit your blog invite. You say the Tories are threatening to 'nationalise the NHS'. This is a good thing. They're not doing this. In general, beef up the direction of what you're saying. These are the biggest cuts seen since the Depression - emphasise this. These aren't merely Tory cuts, they're liberal cuts as well: make sure this is mentioned.

Have you spread the word through union branches?

Have you spread the word through union branches?

1) A genuine gathering/protest against cuts. There are 3 colleges all within a miles radius of the centre - a very centralised town. Many students have been affected (EMA) so it's a genuine protest, and we have no future to look forward to - Uni's not even a possibility for most.

2) The main council building is not too far away. There is a large place for gathering outside there. Possible and good place to march to.

3) At the gathering place there are several large steps leading to a large concrete slab. Ideal for just that, and I'll get a megaphone soon.

4) Shall be doing. They have made plans to and discussed it (like they are doing to the forests now). Like Thatcher, the Tories are based around privatisation (most being millions along with a corporate-funded govt.).

I understand the Liberal side of things. On a poster I've used "Condemn the Con-Dems", and a picture of Clegg (as you'll see below).

5) I'm targeting student branches first and the word is spreading like wildfire. Communist Students emailed me and confirmed it will be a possible turnout. Will contact union branches tomorrow (first full day of going ahead).

Any emails you could post for me would be amazing!

Yeah, I understand. I've been organising on campus against the cuts, and i'm sure you've been at all colleges and had a stall/table and leafletted during busy times. If not get your group together and do it ASAP. My point is there needs to be direction to the demo: not just a gathering but directed at something.

Get onto it then. I'm assuming Oldham has Labour majority control though, so i'd target the constituency Tory HQ.

I wasn't meaning a physical platform ;) I mean confirmed speakers for a rally. If this demo is to have any sway you need to have speakers from different organisaitons and groups. By that I mean student groups (get one of the college association sabatticals along), those from the local union etc. Find out who was on the 26th March in your area and invite them to speak.

That is an awesome flyer, by the way. Really good!

Do you have/need a permit? Also depending on where you would march you might want to contact the police and let them know. I don't know about England but that's necessary here.

Exactly. We'll be decorating the town and colleges tomorrow, hopefully. There's 3 weeks (still very short) so we need to get a move on. I'll work on your points.

It certainly does, however, it ties with getting a permit. Should be okay.

Oh! Hah, I'm currently working on that. Our local MP is a New Labour Socialist (if there is such thing) so it'll be a great chance. Seeing as Oldham has been at the heart of racial prejudice following the 2001 riots, I've invited Unite Against Fascism and hopefully they'll allow a speaker. Also hoping to message underground-rapping activist "Lowkey" via Twitter.
Thank you for the heads up though!

Why thank you! Didn't study graphics for nothing ;)

Shall do, comrade! I'll update the blog soon, just need to sort everything out.

It depends on whether you wish to organise a march. Thus far there is no march/movement planned due to this. I will be carrying a printed version of the following state found on the government website:

I will still probably contact them tomorrow along with the local council. Perhaps tomorrow will be a good day. I actually forgot about that so thumbs up.

Organising a protest

Tell the police if you are organising a protest

The key message from police and local authorities to protesters is always ‘let us know’.

Protests are most likely to avoid confrontation with local residents or workers, or the involvement of police, if organisers:

notify the police in advance of their plans for the protest
advise them of expected numbers
apply for a permit if one is required or requested

If you are organising a march, you are legally required to notify the police six days in advance, or as soon as it is reasonably practical to do so. If you are organising a protest rally that will not involve a march, you are not obliged to notify the police, but you may still want to let them know.

This courtesy allows local authorities to prepare for the gathering, to divert traffic if necessary to ensure the safety of the protesters, and to alert local residents to the disruption they’re likely to face.

I've decided to message the famous rapper Lowkey, also a political activist and speaker. Here he is in action:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTCCe4wkWSQ

However, I need some more help!

How do I go about getting hold of microphone or will a megaphone be enough. I know of friends who are studying lighting and sounding for a media course. Possibility? Also how would I power them if I got a microphone and speakers?

I would just use a megaphone personally, though it depends on turnout. How many are you expecting?

The minimum is 100. Personally I expect around 200-500 people coming to the event. The great part of it is that it'll be a Saturday (very busy) and people are becoming active - not to mention the groups invited as well as students.

I'm oddly nervous. Oh well, here goes nothing.

Well we've got 130 confirmed so far and it's only been a matter of days. Not to mention the numerous groups I invited! Please do show if you can. Communist Students Manchester are hopefully showing too.

Please also post the emails of groups I could message to come. Thank you.

I live under a Labour council too, it just so happens that it's that Labour council that is pushing through the 'Tory cuts'.
Hence the council chamber was stormed and occupied.

It proved a fatal point in the end. The group organising it eventually cancelled the event. Sorry, guys! However, I will make a group/union from this flaw.
