View Full Version : Cuba after Fidel's Death

With Fidel Castro getting on in years, and his mortality is (unfortunately) becoming ever more apparent, we must start to wonder: what will happen to Cuba after Fidel's death? There seems to be a huge contrast in opinion, based on the people I have discussed this with. Will Cuba continue on the path of Socialism, or will the country fall into chaos as the decadent counterrevolutionaries see this as their chance to seize power? All theories and comments are welcomed (but no anti-Fidelista right-wing propaganda please).

doesnt he have a brother that could take over the reigns?

I thought that Raul Castro was only a few years younger than Fidel, so he might die soon as well.

Raul certainly is not a long-term kind of successor. He is only four or five years Fidel's junior, and I have read that he does not take care of himself physically as well as Fidel does. Fidel may outlive his apparent successor. I do not have enough knowledge about current Cuban politics to know who is supposedly in line behind the Castro brothers.

From what I understand, his son the doctor might serve as a worthy candidate. I'm not too keen on the idea of an apparent dynasty in a socialist regime, however.

I just hope there isn't a power struggle in Cuba after Fidel's death, as this could end up in civil war. I kinda agree with you about the dynasty thing Praxis1966, another Cuban citizen (not a member of the castro family) should be given the chance to take the presidency. I dont have anything against the Castro's, but another Cuban citizen should be given a shot at the presidency. But the question is who?

I know. From what it looks like, Fidel's death could create quite the power vacuum in Cuba. The question is, who will be the one to step up and fill it? My fear is that the U$ government will use this as an excuse to step in and install a puppet regime. Chances are, they'll use this as an excuse to institute the old constitution. It was passed after the Spanish-American War when we helped Cuba to independance from Spain. At our insistance, the newly elected Cuban government passed an ammendment that gave the U$ the right to military intervention whenever it saw fit.

I can easily see a capitalist counter-revolution, backed by US support.

that is the most probable case. :(

I hope the Cubans won't fall prey to the heavy propaganda of "liberation " or what ever the fuck that U$ uses to capitalise the country of Cuba.

I hope the solidarity of the Cubanos & Cubanas will prevail!! Fight till the last drop of blood!

Hasta la victoria siempre!

Ya, we've discussed this before here. What happens after Fidel's death will be the defining moment of the revolution.

we all must be prepared to go and fight against the americans if they invade cuba. An attack on cuba is an attack on leftists everywhere, a defeat in cuba would be a defeat for all of us. we cannot let the americans win if they invade :castro: :cuba: :che:

Like I said in the last thread (http://www.che-lives.com/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=4&t=16343&st=20&hl=castro) like this:

All this "when Fidel dies" discussion is pretty silly anyway. How could one man defy the empire for 40 years? The revolution has survived for 40 years not because of one man, but because millions of Cubans actively support it.

I agree with Severian, but usa is a powerfull state and Cuba is a small country... It could easly go very wrong.

What will happen when Fidel dies?
Probably someone would take over, and there will by a less centralized state.

If yanquis try to take the island we shouldnt let them do another of their imperialist acts. We MUST make them know we dont want them there or in any other country.

I could teach some of you some spanish if you want
