Madrid, Spain (CNN) -- Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates resigned Wednesday in a televised speech to his debt-ridden nation after parliament rejected his government's austerity plan intended to ease the financial crisis.
Opposition parties combined to vote down the plan, which they viewed as hurting Portugal's poor, that had been formulated without broad consensus. Socrates, a Socialist, had threatened to resign if the plan failed.

So this is what happened:
The socialist party wanted the make more cuts and every voted against it, then they resigned.

For one side this is good because the socialists here are douchebags, for the other hand it is likely the right wingers take the power and destroy all the rights the communist party gained in the last years.

Yea we have communists, socialists and trotzkysts in the parliement bwa ha ha ha.

no...the communists rejected the plans. The government party is not actually socialist but social democratic eventhough its called Partido Socialista....it currently has well over 90 seats.

Then you have the liberals (european ones)...which is called the Partida Social Democrata...which has around 80 seats....And the conservatives...or the Partido Popular....I believe they hold about 20 seats.

The socialists and communists together hold 29 seats.

I don't know what the Partide Ecologista O Verde (green party) political orientation is....but they have two seats.

I maybe raping the language here...my apologies if I am...and I am scetchy on the particular seat divisions...but It comes close.
