These statistics seem to suggest that Allende was driving the country into the ground... he came to power in 1970 or '71, right? I think he was elected in '70, at least... if the guy who came up with these statistics is a partisan right-winger, these may be unreliable numbers.

I doubt the statistics are that far out. The US at the time was doing all it could to damage the chilean economy, to create the conditions for a military coup. US banks were cancelling credit; US firms were issuing (baseless)lawsuits against Chilean exporters to tie them up, and cost them legal fees; economic assistance to Chile from the US was ended; private US companies stopped investing in Chile; US technicians left Chile, damaging the mining industry they had been working in. This is only what the US directly did, there is also the Chilean bourgeiosie, who participated in the economic sabotage.

Aha... that would be a pretty good reason for a small economy to crumble! Of course, the rightist behind this website probably neglected to mention how the high and mighty superpower standing on Allende's throat was the cause of the strangulation of the Chilean economy.
