So I have heard all the negatives about the Cultural Revolution. What are the positives that came out of it? I have some knowledge about some of the positives out of it from the movie the Passion of the Mao, but i need some more in depth about it.

I personally don't know too much about it, but i believe the fundamental concept behind it, erasing capitalist culture from society and replacing it with a socialist oriented culture, is a good idea.

As a result of the power struggles within the upper party hierarchy that flared up in 1966-67, radical "left-Maoist" groups appeared which subverted Mao's populist rhetoric to the extreme, calling for a state based on workers' councils, and thorough suppression of bureaucratic privileges. They threatened the entire ruling elite by representing the interests of workers and farmers independently from the party, and were popular among youth. Before they could get really organized or link up across provincial lines, these leftists were wiped out by the forces of conservative bureaucrats and military officers in 1968-69, when Mao and Lin decided the working class was getting out of control, used the army to end the Cultural Revolution and began to rehabilitate the rightists. In Guangdong alone, tens of thousands of leftists were killed at the end of the GPCR. The only document in English I know of from one of these groups, the Shengwulian or Hunan Provincial Revolutionary Great Alliance Committee: http://www.marxists.de/china/sheng/index.htm

You can read Mobo Gao's book 'Battle for China's Past: Mao and the Cultural Revolution'. MLs seem to like it because it has good things to say about the Cultural Revolution. You should be able to find it online for free actually.
