I wonder where this will leave peoples' bigoted ideas that the phenomenon of brutally executing homosexuals is restricted to the Muslim world.

A 28-year-old Upper Darby (http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/topics?topic=Upper+Darby) man has been charged with murder after telling police that he stoned a 70-year-old man to death when the man made homosexual advances toward him, authorities say.

John Joe Thomas, 28, of Sunshine Road in Upper Darby, spent almost every day with 70-year-old Murray Seidman (http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/topics?topic=Murray+Seidman) at Seidman’s Lansdowne (http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/topics?topic=Lansdowne) home, police say. Days before Seidman’s body was found on Jan. 12, Thomas allegedly beat Seidman to death with a sock full of rocks.

Thomas told authorities that he read in the Old Testament that homosexuals should be stoned to death. When Seidman allegedly made homosexual advances toward him over a period of time, Thomas said he received a message in his prayers that he must end Seidman’s life, according to court documents.

Police say that Thomas struck Seidman in the head about 10 times with the sock of rocks. Thomas left Seidman dead in his apartment, and then threw his bloody clothing and the bloody sock in a dumpster, according to authorities.

Though the relationship is still unknown, Thomas was the sole executor of Seidman's will and knew how much money was in Seidman's bank accounts, police say.

Thomas told police that he returned to Seidman’s apartment several days later on Jan. 12 to make it appear like he just discovered the body.
When police arrived, they found Thomas crying in the hallway of the apartment building saying, “I’m not going down there again. There is too much blood.”

Police found dried blood spatter on the living room floor, walls, and furniture. Seidman’s body was laying face down on the living room floor, police said.

According to Delaware County (http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/topics?topic=Delaware+County) Medical Examiner Fredric Hellman, Seidman died of multiple blunt force trauma. He said Seidman had been dead between five and 10 days before police found the body.
Thomas is being held on first-degree murder charges.

And thanks to "the gay panic defence" there is even legal precedent for him to get away with it.

Wow. This makes me wonder how many deaths that bit in the Hebrew Bible is associated with.

A whole shit load I'm guessing :(

These religionists make me sick (though there was money involved as well,so here we see two great evils coming together to ruin the world further).

This is just sick. The very influence religion holds over others is just mind-boggling... :(

This is just... O_O. Nothing ever good can come of taking the Bible literally. It just goes to show how dangerous stuff like that is. A book saying it's the word of "God" and threatening "if you don't follow/believe this you will burn eternally" and then telling people to stone others to death...

Probably money or repressed homosexuality which motivated the guy.

How much money are we talking? I'm thinking he probably is a bit of a schemer trying to rake in some cash. I doubt this was a religiously motivated assault. But still it's such a grotesque way to kill someone.

glad to see all the sheep took the bait. Isn't it easy to just blame religion when one doesn't want to be held accountable for being a maniac who most likely wanted to get money out of it?

I don't know the particulars of the case so it would be silly to speculate too much but I can't help thinking that he had a motive to kill the man for money and the whole "the answer came to me in prayers" thing sounds like an attempt to cook up an insanity plea.

Of course he may genuinely be insane, I don't know.

Even assuming pure economically minded cynicism, I'm offended the cultural narrative that that big old patriarch in the sky wants queer folks dead still resonates enough for anyone to invoke it.

Where in the Bible does it say it's OK to stone homosexual people to death? O_O

I think how to tried to build a fake allibi for himself undermines that.

This was a calculated cold blooded murder he must've planned for some time. Hopefully the jury have the sense to see that.

This has less to do with religion and more to do with money. Religion is a cover, if anything.:(

Leviticus 18:22

"And if a man lie with mankind, as with womankind, both of them have committed abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."

If you want all the punishment stuff...that is a good place to start. The passage is pretty much the same in all translations and versions of the Bible....mnior deviations but the main gist of it is: "gay people should die".

No...as far as the specific method goes...that is not really worded as such.

But yeah.....the Bible is not all love and hugs....it actually in some places quite a horrible book

Edit:
Also...it is directed at men. The interpretation sometimes makes it apply to women as well but the clasical interpretations say this law is specifically against male homosexuality. Because laying with a man as with a woman is an insult to the man because women are supposed to be property (according to Israels (the ancient kingdom) by-laws) and therefore do not have the same status as men and are not equal in humanity and behaviour in the eyes of God. (based on the explanations and Bible critics of J. Nelson)

Isn't religion nice?
