So I was hanging out in the library today at college and I came across a stack of books (about 3 or 4) of Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead. It had a big sign over it saying 'FREE', so I asked the library assistant if I could take one, and she said yes, so I did. I asked why they were giving them away, and she hadn't even heard of Rand; didn't know a thing about it. I thought this was a bit weird that she didn't know why they were there, so I thought I would ask my philosophy teacher if he had anything to with it, and he responded by conflating Rand with fascism, insisting that he wouldn't be involved in that at all. Well this book is a student and centennial edition; it also says on the back 'not for resale'. It also has a big card inside advertising the Ayn Rand Institute. Maybe I am thinking this over too much --- but do to the ARI send out copies of their books to colleges to try and push their ideology with students? I dunno, what does anyone else think? I just found it exciting that they were giving away free books. Have you ever had any experiences with this kinda thing?

Yeah, they give out free books. Hell I remember for awhile some of them were putting up little posters invoking the virtues of reading Atlas Shrugged and Fountainhead.
I remember in my school we read Anthem, and there was a bit in the back that had some contact information if you wanted more free copies for the school. I think honestly that's how my school got so much damn copies.
There used to be a newspaper that was in my University too- seemingly shared in the region because my friend at another university had the same paper- that no one ever picked up. There were issues in the stack from a year before I even entered. It was also close to the bathroom and I found it necessary to use once when toilet paper ran out.

Kinda like how perverts leave Polaroids of their genitalia lying around for children to find.

Library sales are great. I got a complete reference text on the chemical elements for 20p.

When I was going to school, they had posters encouraging people to read and they'd include pictures of students, faculty, and staff holding up their favorite books. One girl had Atlas Shrugs.
Idk, though. Maybe I should look into reading Rand. I live in an area of my state with a lot of at least "pseudo-Randroids."

I'd caution you against relying too much on library discards. They had to be discarded for a reason, you see.
But at any rate, I scored a Michael Moorcock novel at the local Good Will.

If I publish a paper that cites the text and turns out to be incorrect as a consequence, I'll be sure to publish a retraction. Otherwise I think I'll be OK.

There was a thing in the UK last week for 'world book day' where they were giving out free books around the country. No Ayn Rand, fortunately.

This one... I've actually scored Camus, Sartre, Paine, and... Wait for it... A copy of James Petras's Critical Perspectives on Imperialism and Social Class in the Third World for like two bones a piece in various thrift stores.

My uni's library was giving away super old books once. I also scored like, 22 books off a Marxist professor that was leaving the uni.

There is one thing about Ayn Rand I love. She's the best way to spark a petty political conversation. My english teacher is making the yearbook and saw an Ayn Rand quote. We both had an  look on our faces. I asked "why would there be a quote by a person who promoted selfishness in her philosophy in a book that is supposed to be about unity and friendship?" he replied "I don't know, she was an idiot." Then a student asked who she was and he answered "Some bigoted idiot, now get back to working on the yearbook."
