What I find interesting is that the lowest union states are in the republican south (which also have the highest poverty rates), if you want to know how the country will look like economically when the repulicans have their way, look at this (http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/28/the-poorest-states-of-america/), interesting huh. The one exception is Michigan, which was mainly due to the huge Capital flight and the destruction of the auto industry (after the Unions messed up by trying to play nice).
Unions in my opinion cannot regain ground in the US by focusing on the public sector, which is important sure, but the way to go is through unions like the SEIU, Unitehere and the IWW, low wage service sector workers, thats where you need to organize.
