View Full Version : Reacting to violence

Greetings,

How is one to react to violence? I am talking about reacting as an individual, so please leave politics out of this. I am not talking about various resistance groups and such to fight against imperialist invasion and so on. As an individual, what is one to do when confronted with violent people?

This is more of a personal situatoin type of thing, depends on the nature, I'm a believer in the turn the other cheek to a slap philosophy but return the fist to a punch.

"As far as it is possible with you be peacable with all men." (can't remember the scripture). Meaning do your best to stop a violent situation, a slap in the face is a provocation, an insult is a provocation, not an assault, so me personally I try and avoid a violent situation and just get out of it, but as soon as a provocation turns into an assualt your free to go.

Obviously this is easier said than done, because provocations are, well, provocative.

I punch people randomly, many times as soon as I meet them, as a pre-emptive measure :D

Really, it's situational. Mostly it should be avoided. But sometimes it is necessary for self-preservation; muggings, lunatics on a rampage, or even protecting your social status from someone trying to be dominant (i.e. standing up to a bully).

Pepper spray. Try the 'Inferno' line from Cold Steel. Carry that, and they'll regret attacking you.

Violence isn’t just physical assault, powerful people and groups who create, sustain, and defend the economic inequality which crushes vast swathes of the population is violent too. This type of violence should be met with the degree of resistance necessary. Unfortunately, as F. Douglas understood, powerful people will never relinquish control voluntarily, violence is a necessary tool, and should be handled responsibly.

Good point. All too often when people talk about violence, aggression, and coercion, they only talk about the physical aspects. But mental violence is just, if not more harmful than physical violence.

Depends. They mug me, they get my wallet. They have a knife, I run like fucking hell. They swing at me, give them a one, two (left jab, right cross) duck down and lift them up and slam them into the ground. Fight over.

Dip right, throw a rleft cross to the midsection (Southpaw). When you dip for the grab, I extend my legs back and fall on top of you driving my chin into your spine. Turn it into a guillotine choke.

As you fall on top I grasp left leg and turn the corner ending in side mount for some punishing time.

Pacifists are status quo apologists. What if I'm about to rape your grandma? Are you just going to let me becuase you're a pacifist?

A pox on strict pacifism. Non-violence is good, pacifism is a joke.

Why not? What do you gain by flat-out refusing to kill anyone, no matter the circumstances? Your silly and childish idealism is sickening.

I don't support the death of other sentient beings. It goes against the teachings of the Buddha.

“They are not following dharma who resort to violence to achieve their purpose. But those who lead others through nonviolent means, knowing right and wrong, may be called guardians of the dharma.” ~ Gautama Siddharta

And if I just won't give up? You're either going to have to kill me, or I kill you and rape your gma.
Either way it doesn't matter. You said you would defend yourself. So you've proved how silly pacifism is in the first place.

Just to make it clear, I am a believer in non-violence. But more as a practical issue than any moral thing. Violence is rarely necessary, mostly counter-productive. But sometimes it is absolutely necessary, tho it is never good nor justified. You should still serve time if you injure someone in self-defense imo.

Ele'ill
17th March 2011, 19:12
What's even worse is when these pacifists and even those strict advocates of non-violence start getting involved in other's struggles and playing their peace sign power from a position of pure privilege when in fact they're taking power away from the struggle by removing viable options to what would otherwise be clear cut victories.

Why should we support violence only when it leads just to more violence?

Revolution starts with U
17th March 2011, 19:22
You should never support violence. But that doesn't mean it isn't/wasn't necessary. Sometimes if a bully is picking on you you can either:
A) Kick or threaten to kick his ass and preserve your social standing
B) Hunker away and be taken advantage of by people who see you as weak

And yes, I regard capitalists and governments as merely Bullies writ large.

Ele'ill

Why should we support violence only when it leads just to more violence?

Because a lack of violence in the face of violence often results in compliance, submission and allowance.

I can agree with that. But:
First, that's the threat of violence. Is violence really that much different than the threat thereof?
Second, sometime your hiss won't scare them.

Besides, that looks like a zen buddhist. And we all know where zen/ch'an buddhism got its start; the Shoalin temple.

Ele'ill
17th March 2011, 19:54
This hiss is coming from a population that is at the receiving end of perpetual violence. There is an opposing force in power and in control that doesn't care about all the hissing in the world- especially when the hiss is never backed up with a bite.

Use reasonable force for self defence. I don't really believe in pre-emptive strikes, although it got me off an assault charge way back when :D .. In a violent situation break their nose, its really easy, and temporarily disorientates them, even making them effetcvely blind for a few moments if you need to run away. Bonus points if you kill them, it happens a lot, the shards of bone penetrate up through the brain and insta-death. If not at least they're gonna look like quasimodo for a week! Also a very tightly rolled up newspaper used vertically as opposed to horizontally is very effective, and legal.

The Hissing is assertiveness. Just don't be aggressive or be using violence. You should criticize others you know who are wrong.

Like supporting gay rights, peace, or even socialism.

I make no distinction between Zen (japanese) and Ch'an (chinese) buddhism. Not all ch'an buddhists wear black; shaolin uses orange.

The Hissing is assertiveness.

The opposing force in power doesn't care.

Just don't be aggressive or be using violence.

There are situations where the use of violence is the only method that will yield a return. There are situations where methods utilizing violence are not appropriate.

Don't be utilizing various tactics incompetently.

You should criticize others you know who are wrong.

Like supporting gay rights, peace, or even socialism.
