I have just finished this book, and I sincerely recommend it to anyone who has an interest in leftist theory or history in Latin America, or anyone who just wants to read an interesting story. I found the portrayal of different political ideologies as characters to be clever. For those of you who have read it, who do you identify most with?
Miguel, Jaime, Pedro Tercero, or Esteban Trueba?

Great topic, The House of the Spirits is one of my all-time favorite novels if not my favorite, and it helped me move away from reformism to revolutionary politics when I was younger. It's been awhile since I read it...but I definitely identify strongly with Miguel. I also respect Esteban Trueba a lot; part of me can't help but appreciate Nicolas' love of life even if he was apolitical and self-centered, especially compared to his brother.
