Kansas State Rep. Virgil Peck (R) suggested Monday that the best way to deal with the illegal immigration problem may be the same way the state might deal with the problem of "feral hogs" -- by shooting them from a helicopter.

The state's House Appropriations Committee was debating financing for controlling the feral swine problem, the Lawrence Journal World reports, when one legislator suggested the problem could be handled by shooting them from helicopters. Peck offered: "It looks like to me if shooting these immigrating feral hogs works maybe we have found a [solution] to our illegal immigration problem."

Scott Rothschild of the Journal World reports Peck as saying, when asked about the comment, that he was just joking:

Asked about his comment, Peck was unapologetic. "I was just speaking like a southeast Kansas person," he said.

He said most of his constituents are extremely upset with illegal immigration and the state and federal government response.
He said he didn't expect any further controversy over his comment. "I think it's over," he said.

Hey guys, I got an idea. Why don't we gather up these bigoted-ass Kansas gringos and hack up their huevos with a machete?

Offended? Don't be. I'm just speaking like a Mexican immigrant.

CONCORD, N.H. – A 91-year-old freshman lawmaker who suggested the mentally disabled should be shipped to Siberia resigned Monday from the state House and said he was sorry that his "big mouth caused this furor."

Rep. Martin Harty's comments came to light last week during testimony at a hearing on proposed cuts to the state budget. He said he was kidding around with a female caller who supported funding for the homeless when he raised the issue of eugenics and the world's population growth.

Harty, a Republican from Barrington, said he didn't know what to do with mentally disturbed people and suggested renting a spot off Russia. He said the woman called him an Adolf Hitler and hung up.

"I was just getting the hang of it some, but with the slightly unfavorable publicity I've been getting the last few days, I'll never be an effective lawmaker," Harty said in his handwritten resignation letter.

He's probably onto something. There are states in the country where David Duke can get elected to the state legislature and win the majority of the white vote in his gubernatorial and senatorial races.

I like the argument that he is just "representing his constituency"

clearly, the US has utterly failed in the education of some people in Kansas

I try it all the time; it never works. I'm usually informed that "there were no laws" that restricted European colonialism, since apparently social conventions are only defined as "laws" when white people invent them.

It can backfire on you though. I've often had white folks point out what happened to the First Nations when the illegal European immigrants stuck around.

Apparently "I called dibs" is a valid foreign policy strategy.

It depends who I'm talking to. I debate a lot of white supremacists/racial nationalists, so pointing out that most illegal immigrants are racial Indians tends to strike a nerve. I can't do that with mainline rightists, since I'm not an actual racial nationalist.

I know the F word gets thrown around all too often these days (and RevLeft is no exception), but this is clearly comment with fascist overtones. Reducing an ethnic minority to the status of an animal and advocating the use of deadly violence to drive them out is nothing to laugh at.

Hello my friend: This is not surprising at all. In fact this is not even news to me. This is as normal as apple pie in the USA. Because this has been happening since 1600s. This the same USA founded by fascist killers (Jefferson, Washington, etc.) who killed 20 million american indians from 1600 to 1776. For more information on how evil and nazis were US founders go to http://www.brianwillson.com Hitler, Hitler and Hitler since 1600s

One hundred years ago, a town in Southeast Kansas was where the largest socialist newspaper (Appeal To Reason) was based. I wish it was still like that, rather than have these sickening statesmen say they represent the people.

As things deteriorate further in the US, the politics are only going to get crazier and more extreme. Sadly, I think things like this are only the beginning. It's only shocking because elected officials are saying what is said privately among right wing Americans on a daily basis.

His "I was just talking like a southeast Kansas person" quote is surprisingly honest. I'm sure speech like this is common there, and he knows that it is.

S.Artesian
19th March 2011, 17:50
"Common" doesn't make it the hegemonic, or even a dominant mode of speech, thought or action. "Just talking like a southeast Kansas person" is as much a bullshit dishonest corrupt vicious distortion as saying "shoot the immigrants from helicopters."

That mythology-- that this is the "most" think-- is what has to be attacked with fervor equal to that of fervor in attacking the racist statements themselves.

"southeast Kansas persons" do not think immigrants should be hunted down and shot. Crackpot, vicious, racist, and bankrolled persons say those things.

People do not think a congresswoman should be shot in the head on the street. Vicious, crackpot, racist, nazi, bankrolled people think that.

I feel very strange right now, like a feather. I'm either VERY VERY VERY VERY fucking pissed, so much so it just doesn't show, and I'm about to have a stroke/heart attack from the rage. Or I'm so fucking confused, I'm at a loss for any words to counteract and my brain has willfully cut off oxygen to itself for a moment, to give me a bit of a high and light feeling.

I support gulag for these types of fascist scum. Work them to death in Uranium mines.

And they condemn communists. While talking about shipping mentally ill people to Siberia and shooting immigrants like pigs. If anyone deservers to be "shipped to Siberia" it is them.
