They call themselves the geração à rasca, Portugal's "desperate generation" - university graduates aged from 21 to 35 who are desperate to start a career, earn a steady wage and move out of their parents' homes.Rev lefters,
I am very glad to tell you all that portuguese people were able to mobilize more than 200 thousand people (good for a small country) against the government, the system and austherity.
It was a hell of a demo and even the band that will represent Portugal in eurovision was there(they might be eluded because of the leftist lyrics).

Wow! That's great. I only expected tens of thousands, from reading news reports.

I thought it would be a complete failure.
I went there and the protesters filled the streets.

I doubt the government will step down but it is happy to see the people protesting.
And I expected a bigger presence of the trotzkyst and comunist parties. I know they were there but without banners what was a bit dissapointing.
Some more pics.
Note the anarchist flag.

And the typical anarcho-sindicalist that were there. It says: United and self organized we will give them the crisis.

What is the state of the anarchist movement in Portugal?
The anarcho- sindicalists are the most active movement.
It is preety fucked up because since an antifascist demo in 2007 the police has been trying to sabotage the anarchists, and the television has done some propaganda against us aswell.
Just for you to have an ideia, during the NATO summit in November 2010 they released some panphlets saying that anarcho-libertarian meetings were outlawed.

And by that, acting exactly like a party...
But great news, 200,000 protesters in a city of 1 million inhabitants is something really big.

The Portuguese prime minister Jose Socrates (not President) has resigned after the Portuguese parliament voted against a severe austerity programme that his government wanted to implement.
