BREAKING FOR CALIFORNIA Tsunami wave expected to hit San Francisco at 8:08 am PST No word on height.
UPDATE 1:15am PST: Holy shit my TV just went to an emergency message on every channel warning of the approaching tsunami wave. There was a loud beeping sound and then a pre recorded voice warning of an imminent tsunami and listed several cities in the Bay Area. Pretty much all of them on the coast

I get emails from the USGS and there were many strong earthquakes in Japan today. Hopefully the number of deaths can be minimised.

This is only the beginning, I just hope it isn;t one the same scale as the last tsunami :(
I can't believe the earthquake was an 8.9... I'm pretty sure I've never heard of an earthquake anywhere near that magnitude before.
EDIT: Yeah, nevermind... looked it up on wikipedia a minute ago and apparently I just have a shitty memory.

I can't believe the earthquake was an 8.9... I'm pretty sure I've never heard of an earthquake anywhere near that magnitude before.
It's the seventh largest in recorded history and the largest in Japan ever.

There was also an earthquake on the Chinese-Burmese border shortly before the one in Japan, but that one appears to be less serious, although people there have been killed and injured as well.

Yeah, I was just looking at that right before I read your post. Apparently earthquakes in the 8's aren't as uncommon as I thought, but still... seventh largest in recorded history is pretty crazy.

Shit, heavy earthquake, then a tsunami and now an nuclear powerplant is on fire there.
Don't think it will remain on the now reported 30 dead.
At least it happend during day time and didn't catch them in their sleep.

The tsunami just hit the malukas, a lot smaller than Japan, only about half a meter high instead of 10. Still if you live near the coast in hawai, new Zealand, or the west coast of the US I wouldn't gamble and head for a bar inland for a while.

The nuclear fall out is what worries me the most. Apparently they are mentioning 60 fatalities. Of course the economic fall out is the secondary disaster too.
It's all pretty gloomy.
My sympathies first and foremost to the victims and the people of Japan, especially Sendai.

Japanese police have found hundreds of bodies on a beach. They all seemed to have drowned due to the tsunami. I wouldn't be surprised if this disaster equals that of December 2004.

all this will have huuge economical repercussion worldwide. if it hit the us and damage enough property, it might be the final nail in the coffin of Obama economical ''recovery.
with the price of gas and commodities already on the rise, it will things much much worst.

I've read that they should reach the west coast of the continental US in around two hours from now - it's already reached Hawaii. I don't think it'll cause too much problems there, though.

like said by the others, it seems that nothing more than maybe a few extra waves will happen on the westcoast.
in principle an tsunami dies down over time so if it on hawai and newzealand was already almost nothing jou should notice nothing except an good surf day but scientists just dont know enough to be completly sure.
just stay of the beach and to be sure contemplate going for the highest ground you can find but you should be fine.

From the BBC -
The United States appears to be out of major danger from the tsunami, White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley has said. "The tsunami wave has gone through Hawaii and there does not seem to be any enormous impact, which is extremely encouraging," he told a meeting of the President's Export Council in Washington. There was still some risk to the US West Coast, "but I think the enormous fears that that were there hours ago, for some of us hours ago, has diminished greatly, which is quite a relief for all of us", Mr Daley added.

80,000 people, I think beyond 2000 people your brain just stops counting, its so tragic and terrible, its almost hard to comprehend, if they went on the news and said twice as many people died I think the reaction would be the same.
Its one of those types of disasters you just can't process.
I wonder if theres any Japanese on revleft?
