Rep. Peter King opens Muslim 'radicalization' hearing, saying it 'must go forward'
New York Congressman Peter King says not to hold the controversial hearing would be a 'craven surrender to political correctness.' Concerns have been raised that the hearing could stigmatize Muslim Americans and increase hostility worldwide between Muslims and the U.S. government.

In opening his congressional hearing on the "radicalization" of Muslims in the United States, Rep. Peter King on Thursday forcefully pushed back against critics who contend his inquiry demonizes an entire community and threatens national security.

"I remain convinced that these hearings must go forward. And they will," King told a packed hearing room on Capitol Hill. "To back down would be a craven surrender to political correctness and an abdication of what I believe to be the main responsibility of this committee -- to protect America from a terrorist attack.

"Despite what passes for conventional wisdom in certain circles, there is nothing radical or un-American in holding these hearings," said King, who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee.

King, a Republican congressman from New York whose district was heavily effected by the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, convened the hearing because of what he termed a growing threat of homegrown terrorism among Muslim men in the United States.

I am watching this live:
http://maddowblog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/03/10/6235338-watch-live-house-hearing-on-islamic-radicalization-in-america

This hearing reminds me of the old McCarthy hearing of the 1950s.

Instead of finding liberal Americans who turned into the radicals of Communism. It's now finding American Muslims who turned into radical Islam.

But hell, this is America that is turning more Tea Party and more Christian

I've been rubbernecking some of the coverage over on Fox 'news' and its disgusting the way they are categorising just one element in society and not the other more immediate dangers that exist such as Wall street, unemployment and also the number of school shootings etc..

What probably wont be discussed at this hearing is the reason and main cause for 'Muslim radicalisation' and that is US war crimes and undue interference in foreign affairs.

All this will do is basically extend racial profiling on to the streets and cause unneeded paranoia and division.

The growing rise of Evangelicalism and Christian fundelmentalism.

Republicans in the hearing are using this to show their evidence that radicals has taken over Islam in America. While the Democrats are trying to show how a sham this hearing is and it remind the people this is about Islamophiba than protecting America.

The Democrats are using this quote but withdrawing the name of the person for "respect." ;)

"Unfortunately, we have too many mosques in this country. There are too many people who are sympathetic to radical Islam. We should be looking at them more carefully. We should be finding out how we can infiltrate. "

Who said that? Oh Rep. Peter King the guy who created the hearing.

Oh the leader of this hearing has a few more quotes:

King has more:

“[Y]ou could say that 80-85 percent of mosques in this country are controlled by Islamic fundamentalists.”

Muslims are “an enemy living amongst us.”

“They won’t turn in their own. They won’t tell what’s going on in the mosques. They won’t come forward and cooperate with the police.”

I get what you mean, but its just a person pet peve of mine. Christian fundementalists, they don't follow ANY of the fundementals of christianity, or what Christ teachings were about.

Democrats need to stop showing respect to people that don't deserve a shread of it.

That does it: The Tea Party is our century's Nazi Party. The united states won't make it past 2050. It'll be a loud and bloody bang.

They chant "Jesus" as if Muslims don't follow Jesus Christ.

There is nothing wrong with anyone from the President to everyday guy in the street asking questions about anything. The problem is when they try to DO something about things.

Rep King is asking questions--as an American has has the right. More people should ask questions--not less. Maybe a Moslem member of Congress should ask question about the Born Again Christians.

I have a feeling there aren't any Muslim members of congress. But this guy is such a hyppocrite, he makes speeches at pro IRA rallys. Fucking ridiculous.

Well said, where's the witchhunt for extremist 'christian' groups? Where's the public outcry over terrorist groups like the KKK?

With an Israeli flag and Jesus loves you placards!?

I have argued before that 'extremism/jihaidsm/islamism/ islamic fundamentalism' or whatever the right wing press want to call them are actually a seperate entity from Islam, and most of my muslim friends agree. Mosques in the UK for example banned a notorious preacher for inciting hatred, we should not believe for one second that extremists are representative of all muslims.

The KKK is just a club for old white men to sit around and count the teeth they have left.

But you're on the money with that one...

Yup. Over in the Phillipines, a bunch of muslims drove a fundamentalist out of his mosque and burnt it down. So if anyone says moderates don't condemn the extremists...

If anybody for some (strange) reason wants to know the Jewish response to this one (just because the story just popped up on my news feed): http://www.jta.org/news/article/2011/03/10/3086362/jewish-groups-criticize-hearings-on-muslims :)

Thats good news, people like the guy in the clip holding the Israeli flags while those idiots chant 'jesus' at him are not representative of the jewish people imo. I'm sorry I inadvertantly brought the israel thing up, its largely irrelevant to this topic, all I'll say is that people like King are as dangerous to jewish people as they are to muslims.

By far.

The most dangerous aspect of this is a genuine issue is derailed by propaganda and scaremongering. And of course when faced by blind hatred even the most moderate muslims must have sympathy for the extremist views. Its like how the English Defence League turned a small number of muslims protesting a British Army parade (with a few fanatic mouthpieces among them) into huge gangs of muslim youths defending their areas and being drawn into extremist beliefs. Thanks gaiiis for defending us!

The Patriot act is extreme. The new body scanners at airports are extreme. Trying to cheat your bus company(like the EDL) is extreme. You can say the students in the UK protesting about tuition hikes and getting on the roof of the building was extreme. But defending yourself from a bunch of bigoted reactionary scumbags is? What garbage is this.

To clarify; The Taliban fighting against Russian or American invaders is not extreme, the Taliban attackign young girls for going to school or not wearing a headscarf is an extreme view of Islam that not all Muslims take. Muslim youths fighting against BNP EDL fascist dickheads is not extreme, (in fact it is commendable) but those youths believing it is acceptable to blow up a train or bus is extremist, in terms of Islamic laws which say suicide is unnacceptable, under any circumstances. I did not say muslims defending themselves from bigots was extremist, if it was implied I'm sorry, I meant no such thing.
