Had you asked me back in January if I knew any good British jazz-electronic bands I probably would have gave you a funny look and said "QUE?". Thankfully I am no longer so ignorant. I was forwarded this band back in February by the walking music encyclopedia that is my best friend after she heard of my dire plight to find a proper band to do artist focus on.
Now, this band, as you may have guessed from the title is called The Cinematic Orchestra. They were founded back in the late 90's by Jason Swinscoe. The other members of the band are: Patrick Carpenter (turn tables), Luke Flowers (drums), Tom Chant (Sax), Nick Ramm (Piano), Stuart McCallum (guitar), and Phil France (double bass). They are currently signed to Ninja Tune records and have nine full albums out, the last coming out last year.
Their style combines jazz improvisation with electronic elements like samples and Swinscoe often remixes their life sample material to create the final song. Though it is very tough ( I think anyways) to see where the production is in song as it is very skillfully done and most songs I listened to you would have no idea such things were used.
What struck me the most about this band however, is the simple, yet powerful emotional sound of a lot of their music. The best of which in my opinion is from their 2007 album Ma Fleur with songs such as To Build a Home and Child Song.
I very much enjoyed listening to this band and will certainly continue to do so. I hope you guys enjoy them as well.
