I know there's some good stuff on the MIA, but are there any other good ways to get free leftist books that a kindle could read?

You can (sort of) read PDFs on Kindle. There are quite a few sources to get those; especially older stuff like Marx. There are also a lot of free older books on Amazon (all the main stuff by Marx, etc).

How is the Kindle's PDF capability? I'm saving up for one to use for that purpose.

Not that great, IMO. Because the PDFs (at least that I've tried) aren't the right size for the screen. So, you either have to try to read tiny words while zoomed out (really tiny, I'm fine with small type, but this is ridiculous) or zoom in so far that you need to scroll over to finish sentences.

Damn. I was going to get a Kindle for that reason.

I dont know of any other ebook readers that do well with PDFs.

I've had an iPad recommended for PDFs but 1. It's Apple and 2. It's freaking expensive.

I use the B&N nook and you can download almost all of Marx's writings on it for free and read them clearly. There are also some quite interesting political anthologies that I had never heard of on the online store as well.

Yea you can get most of Marx's stuff on Kindle for free too. IMO, the Kindle is 100 x better than the Nook. I considered the Nook but quickly decided against it.

The Kindle had much longer battery life (think weeks or months, not days). You can read it in bright sunlight. You can copy text from what you're reading, add notes, and export it all to your computer later (can't do that with Nook).

I was under the impression you can convert PDF to ebook format?

I know of a site that converts pdf to epub. Because I can't post a proper link yet: 2epub(.com)

Kindle does not support epub, but most of the main ereaders will.

After receiving my kindle, I can add that you can convert .pdf to kindle format and read on the kindle just as easily as a normal kindle format book.

Calibre or Mobipocket creator are both very useful software for converting pdfs for kindle. I just acquired all the pdfs available and converted them all at once.

Some are some aren't, however, with the Mobipocket Creator software I've found, you can convert .txt .doc .html or .pdf files into kindle readable files.

I'm going to add that if you do get a kindle, start converting the files you want right now and download the Amazon kindle reader thing for your computer to make sure the files come out right, it takes a while to convert them.

How is the final quality once that conversion happens?

I don't notice much of a difference, but I've only tried converting with pdfs thus far.

I have a Kobo, and it doesn't do PDF very well either. It's also worth pointing out that the Kobo comes preloaded with 100 public domain ebooks, including The Communist Manifesto.

How do you convert the files? Is it via a program or do you have to pay for a service to do it for you?

A program, Mobipocket Creator.

Right, but as far as I know, it's is not possible to convert pdfs that are scans of book pages (which is what a huge number of freely available of books on pdf are). It only works if the pdf was rendered from a document file.

And who wants to sit around converting pdfs all day anyway?

Kindles are good for what they are (and are probably the best eReaders), but not for reading pdfs. If that's your main purpose, I'd look elsewhere.

Do you have a link to such a specific .pdf? I'll try and convert it to see.

For the record, all the downloadable Marx+Engels texts on MIA converted fine.

It doesn't really take that long.

I've been reading a ton of .pdfs on my Kindle since I got it as a Christmas gift, but I'm perhaps more tolerant of that sort of thing than most.

I think there are many more of these types of pdfs floating around freely than pdfs rendered from digital documents, especially when you're talking about old texts.

If you're happy with your kindle that's great. I like mine too. But it's not great as a pdf reader (having to convert pdfs, when they are convertible, just proves that point). If your main goal is to read pdfs rather than kindle files (.mobi) I would look elsewhere.

For some reason I can't even open this file, I tried several times in different browsers and it still refused to open.

It opens fine for me. It's a big file. Maybe you're not giving it enough time. Try right clicking and saving it, then opening with Adobe Reader.

Right clicking worked thanks.

After trying to convert it, it just showed up on my kindle as a bunch of pictures rather than text.

Right. That's what happens when you try to read it on a kindle as a pdf without converting too. And the size usually doesn't match the screen size, so you have to zoom out too far or zoom in too far. Were you able to read it after converting?

I think the "Project Gutenberg" is really nice (gutenberg.org). They do not have that many books specificially for leftists. But Bakunin, Marx and Kropotkin are there in different formats.

For all those PDF-junkies:

If you want a program which can convert from almost any format to all readable ebook formats you could take a look at: "Calibre ebook management" (I am not allowed to post links yet, so just search for it.) It's available not just for Windows, but for MaxOS and Linux as well.

You can even fetch news, update Covers&Metainformation (Author, Name, Year, Categorie, ect) from books and send it all to your Kindle with one click. It is really helpful if you read a lot of classics like us leftists but I find even more helpful is the possibility to read all kinds of text's (for college for example) on your e-reading device instead of printing all that stuff out.

I have a Kindle and all my pdfs have been converted without a hitch by using Calibre. It's a really good program, converts epub, pdf, txt etc. to the Kindles mobi.
