Well, the protests in Algeria failed to materialize today (in the aftermath of some 20 or so people who were arrested leading up to them). We've also heard rumblings out of Tanzania, Cameroon, and Zimbabwe, as well as significant unrest in Mauritania, Sudan and the Ivory Coast. I was wondering, what do people think the prospects of revolt in sub-saharan Africa are? So far it seems like efforts to extend the revolts outside of the Arab states have only met with limited success. I'd also imagine that the lack of infrastructure/communications systems in sub-saharan Africa compared to the Arab states would be a hinderance.

MANZINI – Teachers yesterday sternly warned government to avoid a situation that might result in a revolution similar to that in Libya, Egypt and Tunisia.
They described a proposal for salary cuts as having the potential to cause an uprising.
Teachers advised government to learn from uprisings in North Africa where impatient citizens revolted against authorities.
They threatened to call for a mass action if government were to freeze salary increments for duration of three years as reported by their executive.
Over 3,000 teachers held an extra-ordinary meeting at the Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) headquarters yesterday to discuss the count-ry’s ailing economy.

MBABANE – The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has thrown its weight behind tomorrow’s mass demonstration by labour unions and tertiary students.
The Zwelinzima Vavi-led COSATU issued a statement yesterday saying it was ready to give full support to activities by the country’s labour federations, especially the Swaziland Federation of Trade Unions and the Swaziland Federation of Labour. COSATU said it had noted the disruption of peaceful meetings, harassment and arrest of union leaders and other activities they viewed as infringing on people’s rights.
