I am looking to join a commune so I can live under Socialism without leaving America. I can't seem to find one for me. They are either too small ( < 30 people) or have a waiting list. Or they can be based in religious nuttery!

Please give me some advice.

You can't "live under Socialism" in the United States... no matter what happens in the commune, unfortunately, it is still surrounded by the (for now) real world of capital. That being said, I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea to try living in a commune, to experience some measure, in part, temporarily of what you'd want to experience under socialism. But you should be realistic otherwise you will go sour on socialism when the commune is not the socialist utopia here and now.

That being said, I don't actually know where you can find a good one. Sorry :) Why does it have to be more than 30 ppl, otherwise start your own seems like the best bet?

My advice to you would be to simply forget this idea as it is complete nonsense. You can't affect the political course of a nation by isolating yourself from its social and economic currents, there is just no sense to it at all from a political standpoint. There is nothing socialist about hiding from issues which need to be addressed. And even if you think a commune to be some sort of socialist utopia, it still does not change the fact that others are suffering under the systematic oppression of capitalism while you have your little socialist themed slumber party.

I don't think there has been a real commune that isnt based on religion or some other cultist shit since the 70's.

Hippies tried, but then came the yuppies.

and it's true you can't hide from capitalism. You have to destroy it.

Maybe if there was a way to get over 1000 people to join and start a trend across America, but I don't think people want to give up there comfortable lives just yet. Not the majority of people who love money.

I'm looking for the same thing. You could try the Twin oaks community.
or check out fellowship for intentional community.

I'm in the process of researching the ins and out of either joining one, or finding willing people to start one.

Although, friend as progressive as these communes are I would recommend spreading socialism within capitalist America. Talk to fellow workers about the benefits of democratic organization. Try to start up collectives. Attend rallies and support unions. I know that living under capitalism can be depressing, but we have to confront the problem.

As a lot of posters have said -- isolating yourself from the world and trying to escape into a withdrawn socialist utopia is irresponsible, if you have any care about people in general or the course of world history.

A friend of mine once quipped, "socialism in one country was bad enough, let's not even think about socialism in one apartment block."

BUT down through history, militant radicals have often organized themselves into communes or quasi-communes. From working class CPUSA radicals in the 1930s forming urban communes to Israeli kibbutzes, there are many examples of communes that have to some degree pursued the class struggle. And some Parties, including the Bolsheviks, had an element of the "commune" about them in that they were redistributive and had a particular way of life that they maintained. So -- to dismiss the commune entirely, is wrong.

The commune is a social form and it is a higher social form than capitalism, but much like socialism in one country, it cannot survive indefinitely while capitalism prevails. So, Israeli kibbutzes, for instance, have become largely capitalist, although some hold-outs remain. But that doesn't mean you can't use the form to better fight for the revolution.
