Thirsty Crow

So, I'm taking a course at the uni this semester which deals with issue of power and society (in the field of social philosophy). Incorporating a historical approach, the course will deal with historical instances of the conceptualization of power (Machiavelli and Hobbes, Gramsci and Foucault) but it is open to suggestions regarding study material.
I was hoping someone could suggest a sound Marxist approach when it comes to issues of power, its function and manifestations within society (apart from Gramsci).
Any ideas/reading materials?
My first thought was Nicos Poulantzas' work on the modern state. How about that? Any idea which work exactly would fit in?
