Here's an official statement of the CPI, tell me your opinions about it:
"Sharon is preparing a Catastrophe
MK Isam Mahoul, General Secretary of the CPI, stated, "The assassination attempt on Sheikh Yasin was a provocation on the part of the Sharon government whose purpose was to widen the circle of bloodshed and destroy any chance of a political solution that will lead to peace without occupation and settlements."
The assassination attempt on the leader of the Hamas, Sheikh Yasin, during which 14 Palestinian civilians were injured, was a dangerous escalation. The price of this escalation is likely to be paid by both sides - Israelis and Palestinians - emphasized MK Mahoul in an announcement made public Sunday.
Mahoul added that the Sharon-Mofaz-Lapid government acts with criminally and systematically to broaden the aggression against the Palestinian people, using settlements, roadblocks, the security wall, assassinations, and home demolitions. For Sharon and his partners, these means serve the cause of derailing the chance for a diplomatic solution and allowing the continuation and widening of the occupation.
It's no coincidence, points out Mahoul, that during one week the Palestinian prime minister Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) tendered his resignation, Israeli government spokesmen openly threatened Arafat with deportation, and an assassination was attempted against Sheikh Yasin. Even the crocodile tears shed by the official representatives of the Sharon government lamenting Abu Mazen' resignation couldn't hide Sharon's satisfaction at seeing the efforts to apply international pressure to implement the "roadmap" sidetracked.
The full backing provided by the Bush administration to Sharon's destructive policies, including assassination of Palestinian figures and the attempt on Sheikh Yasin, places the responsibility for the collapse of the "roadmap" squarely on the American regime, even though they themselves prepared supposedly as a plan to lead the peoples of the region to a diplomatic solution. Again the excuse of "War against Terror" is used by the Bush administration not only to wage a war of occupation as in Iraq, but also to aid the Sharon government to stop any attempt, fragile as may be, to reduce the number of attacks and stop the whirlpool of violence.
Mahoul sharply criticized the crass intervention of the American administration and the Sharon government in the internal affairs of the Palestinian people and especially on the growing
incitement against Yassir Arafat, chairman of the Palestinian Authority.
Mahoul expressed his hope that the Palestinian people will succeed in overcoming its internal divisions in order to unite in the struggle to end the occupation and achieve a just and lasting peace.
The CPI, emphasized Mahoul, warns against the danger of descending into an all out war against the Palestinian people and against a diplomatic solution, for which the Sharon-Mofaz settlement and occupation government are paving the way. Another invasion of the Palestinian cities by the Israeli army and an escalation of the fight against the Palestinian Authority will heighten the threat to civilian safety, as well as exacerbate the economic crisis and further spread poverty and suffering by both peoples."
