I'm considering buying one, how good are they for like leftist political books and such? I've never owned one before so tell me about them in general too if you like, I can't really read well on a computer screen, how does the screen of a kindle compare? I would imagine it's somewhat different, does it get glare? etc.

I have a kindle myself (you might as well get the cheaper ones, without the 3G). They cna hold thousands of books, and quite useful. There's also websites that you can download ebooks for the Kindle from for free. The screen does not have a background light, so it's like reading a book.

I have one, it was one piece of technology I knew I would use and I was right. A real good investment. I load the thing up with MIA stuff because I also hate reading off of a computer screen. It is like reading a piece of paper. I remember i took it out of the box and I tried peeling the sticker off the screen just to realize it was a graphic.

There was a thread little while ago by someone posting from their Kindle so I presume they do.

The device and the ebooks are two separate things. It's really more about availability of titles.
But, if you're interested in the Kindle:

Screw you, technology. I love owning actual books.

Do they have any annoying features to prevent people putting ebooks of a "non-purchaced" nature on them? If so how tedious is it to get around such a feature?

Mine doesn't seem to have any problems with such items, no. In fact, I would say most of the 1500 or so books I have on mine fall into that category.

An eBook is just a certain file format. A kindle is just like a giant USB and a piece of software than can open eBook file formats. So all you have to do is take the eBook file from your computer and drag and drop it onto your Kindle.
Also, there are a ton of free eBooks out there that are legal to download so it's not like it's that big of a deal.
I just dl'd Sartre's Existentialism Is A Humanism for free. :D I think all MIA titles are free somehow.
