View Full Version : Are you ever told you look like you're a particular nationality?

I've been told a lot that I look Swedish (occasionally Norwegian or more generally Scandinavian). I don't even have white blonde hair or blue eyes so I don't know what people base this judgment on, considering that so often such things are based on gross stereotypes like that.
One of my best friends in Indians but looks very "Spanish" (in the stereotypical sense). He actually tells girls that he meets while out clubbing that he's Spanish rather than Indian (which I think is quite tragic but whatever). I have another friend who is Spanish but who people often assume is Indian, to the extent that people will ask him what part of India he is from, etc.
Does this happen to anybody else?

Once one of my ex's sisters told me I looked Jewish.
So I immediatly set about terrorising local Arabs and stealing there houses, then demanded huge quantaties of arms from the US embassy.

There are only two types of English in America:
1. Sophisticated, well educatied, Rich Feudal overlords
2. Cheeky Cockneys.

But in general, people think I'm somewhat foreign due to an odd-sounding yet very good English. People guess I'm Spanish, Southern French, or Italian.

I've been told that I've looked like a lot of nationalities and my eyes squint when I smile, so I've had people tell me I "smile like an asian". When I lived in Florida, I'd get really tan and people would ask me if I was (insert random hispanic nationality here).
People usually ask me if I have a light English, Irish, Scottish, or Australian accent. Americans aren't very good at deciphering accents. When I speak Spanish, I've had people say I sound russian.lol

I often get guessed as Scandinavian, German or Eastern European (Ukraine is a favourite, I even have a Jewish slight lookalike in Kiev apparently) even though I don't fit the stereotypes of tall and blond. Irish comes up a lot, and I am partly Irish. I once asked this question on another forum, and I got replies (I used a picture) from all over Europe, including Spain and Turkey even though I don't look Spanish or Turkish at all.
I think it's very subjective and people tend to either go with stereotypes or based on people they know or have seen from those countries.

I'm 1 metre 76 myself, quite average for a British male. I'm pasty, dark-haired and blue eyed myself (there seems to be far more dark haired people with blue eyes than blond/e people with blue eyes, at least from what I've seen).

In my neighborhood there lives quite a few Polish people, they do indeed generally look a bit different than Scandinavians. Of course these aren't features you notice unless you see a large 'sample size'. An individual Polish person can look exactly like an individual Scandinavian.

People used to always think I was Hispanic because I'm brown and live in Florida. Most of them now think I'm Arab and when I tell them I'm half-Italian and half-Indian I get pissed off when they tell me I only look Indian. I know exactly why they think that, it's because they assume Middle Eastern and South Asian people are exactly the same even though it really is the half-Italian that makes me look Arab.

I get asked where I'm from a lot, but no one ever makes a guess. I must seem abnormal to people in the US. Weird considering I was born in the US. Even weirder, I've been in other countries and hanging out with people where everyone knows I'm from the US and they still say that I seem different from other USers. That has even happened in both of the countries my parents are from.

I'm North Indian and I laugh when arrogant North Indians say that type of stuff because we have light skin, but in all reality us Indians only have light skin because our ancestors were raped when the Persian Empire invaded India. So if anything, North Indians don't look Indian because we're light and part Iranian.

Some days ago I actually said something like that in a discussion about how in Latin America there are nicknames like "ruso", "aleman",...etc.
And they were asking why they call someone like that since Europeans look so different, they just can't use those for anyone who loos X,Y...
Anyway, they called me racist for saying that.
Well, I get mistaken for east-asian 95% of the time, even Asians themselves mistake me for their respective nationality (e.g. chinese,philippine,korean,japanese...). No matter where I go...

Even saying that is a problem because there's no absolute definition of what characteristics make you look 'indian'. Indians look like what Indians actually are within the boundaries of India and of course this is constantly changing. Whether an Indian's ancestors were Persian, Turkic, Pathan, Scythian, Arab or Greek doesn't change the fact that they must by definition look Indian.

Maybe we should consult the experts at Stormfront and setup some guidelines.
