I'm really interested in any theories and studies on culture and how it's tied to capitalism, particularly in the more developed nations. I've read a bit of Zizek, but are there other authors or theories that explain the contradictions in capitalist consumer culture, and particularly the idea of desperation or depression in our times?

Yeah this is a big academic area, theres loads of good writers.
I guess the main ones are the Frankfurt School (particularly Adorno) and postmodernist stuff like Fredric Jameson.. There a lot of other philosophers and thinkers who are influenced by marxism but fit more into other categories like poststructuralists and deleuze and all the other things i dont understand.
Honestly though i havnt come across any writer as good as zizek. its not that he's that original, he just has a great mix of influences and uses them together so well
