Not too long ago I got hold of a piece of software called Terragen. As the name suggests, it can be used to generate very detailed and realistic looking terrain and scenery to your own specifications. For high quality pictures like the ones below, rendering takes around 20-30 hours.

Because I am new to using it you'll see that the scenery is similar. However, it generates an entire sphere/planet (or more), so you can basically create pictures of whatever you want of terrain/scenery and set everything from lighting to coloring, clouds, terrain formations, water levels, etc.

I looked at Terragen briefly, but it was just too damn complicated for me to get used to.
I opted for a simpler, less fancy program. I don't remember the name, though.
It might be TerraVista (http://www.terrex.com/). but I'm not sure.

I really dig those renders, though.

The ripples in the water are too big.
